PHY 121 Electromagnetic Theory Problem Set - 6

This document contains a 5 problem physics assignment on electromagnetic theory and induction. Problem 1 involves calculating the magnetic flux and induced emf in a square loop near a current carrying wire. Problem 2 asks to find the induced emf in a square loop in a time-varying magnetic field. Problem 3 is about finding the electric field inside and outside a solenoid with a time-varying current. Problem 4 deals with the direction and expression for the induced electric field from an alternating current in a wire. Problem 5 covers the induced current and charge in a loop surrounding a solenoid with an increasing or removed current.

Electromagnetic Theory
Problem Set - 6

Assigned Date: March 1

1. A square loop of wire(side a) lies on a table, a distance s from a very long straight wire, which
carries a current, I as in figure.
Find flux of B through the loop.
If someone now pulls the loop directly away from the wire, at speed v, what emf is generated? In what direction(clockwise or anticlockwise) does the current flow?
What if the loop is pulled to the right at speed v, instead of away?

2. A square loop of wire, with side a, lies in the first quadrant of the xy plan, with one corner at the
origin. In this region there is a uniform time-dependent magnetic field B(y, t) = ky 3 t2 z (where
k is a constant). Find the emf induced in the loop.
3. Along solenoid with radius a and n turns per unit length carries a time-dependent current I(t)
in the direction. Find the electric field(magnitude and direction) at a distance s from the
axis(both inside and outside solenoid), in the quasistatic approximation.
4. An alternating current I = I0 cos t flows down a long straight wire, and returns along a coaxial
conducting tube of radius a.
In what direction does the induced electric field point(radial, circumferential, or longitudinal)?
Assuming the field goes to zero as s , find E(s, t).
5. A long solenoid of radius a, carrying n turns per unit length, is looped by a wire with resistance
R, as in figure.
= k), what current flows in
If the current in the solenoid is increasing at a constant rate( dI
dt
the loop, and which way (left or right) does it pass through the resistor?
If the current I in the solenoid is pulled out of the loop, turned around, and reinserted,
what total charge passes through the resistor?
