Capacitance Transducers

Capacitance transducers use the principle of capacitance, which is the ability of a body to store an electrical charge between two conductive plates. The capacitance is directly proportional to the surface area of the plates and inversely proportional to the distance between them. Capacitance transducers function by having a movable plate that changes the capacitance based on displacement, level, or pressure. There are different types including displacement transducers, level gauges, and differential pressure transducers.

Capacitance
Capacitanceis the ability of a body to store an
electricalcharge.
Any object that can be electrically charged
exhibits capacitance.
In a parallel plate capacitor, capacitance is
directly proportional to the surface area of the
conductor plates and inversely proportional to
the separation distance between the plates.
If the charges on the plates are +qand q
respectively, andVgives thevoltagebetween
the plates, then the capacitanceCis given by

Dependency
The capacitance is a function only of the
geometry of the design (area of the plates
and the distance between them)
Thepermittivityof thedielectricmaterial
between the plates of the capacitor.
For many dielectric materials, the
permittivity and thus the capacitance, is
independent of the potential difference
between the conductors and the total
charge on them.
