charged with selecting, adapting, and implementing the software system for the
companys new intranet system. Although none will confront him directly just
because he is the team leader, all the other team members agree that Greg has the
biggest ego of anyone involved in the project. He has a history of trying to take
personal credit for the groups successes, but blames everyone else if a problem
arises. Within meetings, he tends to interrupt others without listening to what they
have to say. Communication among the team is suffering. What are the barriers that

2. Dr Miller teaches the Fundamentals of Management course at a large southwest
university. Most of the class is engaged in an excellent discussion regarding the
importance of motivation in the workplace and how to keep employees motivated. Dr
Miller just finished summarizing the most effective motivational techniques generated
from the class discussion when she noticed two students in the back of the classroom.
They were clearly holding their own conversation and paying no attention to the class
discussion. A couple of seconds later, one of them raised his hand and asked, What is
the best way to motivate people? Frustrated at the break down in the communication
process, Dr Miller pointed to the board where she had just listed the results of the
class discussion. What were the sources of Dr Millers frustration? In other words,
what barriers are preventing the desired communication in the classroom? How to
overcome the barriers occurred? (10 marks)
