Assignment 1

This document is an assignment from a Physics course at Universiti Sains Malaysia. It contains 10 problems involving differential equations: (1) identifying order and type of given ODEs and verifying solutions, (2) solving various ODEs using suitable methods, (3) testing ODEs for exactness and solving exact or inexact ODEs using integrating factors, and (4) solving initial value problems. The answers to the problems are also provided.

PUSAT PENGAJIAN SAINS FIZIK

UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA

First Semester, 2010/2011 Academic Session

ZCT 210/4
Part I – Differential Equations (22/7/10)

Assignment #1

(1) State the order of the given ODE. Identify if the equation is linear or not. Verify that the
given function is a solution (c is an arbitrary constant):

(a) y′ = 1 + y 2 ; y = tan( x + c) (b) y′′ + 2 y′ + 10 y = 0; y = 4e − x sin(3x)

(2) Solve the following equations using a suitable method:

(a) y′ + ( x + 2) y 2 = 0 (b) x 3 y′ + 3 yx 2 = 5 sinh (10 x)

1 2 dy
(c) xy′ = y +y (d) + 2 xy = 1 + y 2 + x 2

(e) 3 x y 2 y′ = 3 x 4 + y 3 (f) x( x + y ) y′ = y ( x − y )

x x

1 − 2 y − 4x
(i) xy y′ = 2 y 2 + 4 x 2 (j) y′ = ; Let : u = y + 2 x
1 + y + 2x

(3) Test for exactness. If exact, solve it. If not, find a suitable integrating factor first and
then solve it:

⎛ y ⎞ ⎛1 ⎞
(a) ⎜ − 2 + 2 cos(2 x) ⎟ dx + ⎜ − 2 sin(2 y ) ⎟ dy = 0 (b) ( x − y )(dx − dy ) = 0
⎝ x ⎠ ⎝x ⎠

⎛ x⎞ ⎛ x ⎞
(c) ⎜⎜ cos( xy ) + ⎟⎟ dx + ⎜⎜1 + cos( xy ) ⎟⎟ dy = 0
⎝ y⎠ ⎝ y ⎠

(4) Solve the following IVPs:

(a) (cos ωx + ω sin ωx) dx + e x dy = 0; y (0) = 1; ω is some constant
