Integrated Circuits: EE-307 (3+1) Credit Hours

This document outlines the syllabus for an integrated circuits course. It introduces the instructor, Engr. Umar Mujahid, lists recommended textbooks, and provides an overview of the course structure including topics, assessment breakdown, attendance policy, and course schedule. Key topics to be covered include definitions of integrated circuits, their applications, classifications based on scale of integration (SSI, MSI, LSI, VLSI, ULSI), types (analog and digital), and important integrated circuits like 555 timers, 741 op-amps, 7400 TTL logic gates, and early microprocessors. The course aims to provide students with an understanding of integrated circuits.

What is IC?
Definition:
“It is miniaturized circuit that has been manufactured on
Surface of a thin substrate of semiconductor material.”
IC is basically tiny electronic circuit used to perform the specific
functions such as amplification.

It can be formed as a single unit by diffusing impurities into the

single crystal silicon, which then serve as the semiconductor
Material.

HITECH University 6
Applications
 IC s have made possible the development of many
new products, including Personal calculators, Digital
Watches and computers etc.

 Logic and Arithmetic functions of personal computers

can now be performed on single VLSI Chip that is
called Microprocessor.

HITECH University 7
IC Classification
 SSI Small Scale Integration

 MSI Medium Scale Integration

 LSI Large Scale Integration

 VLSI Very large scale Integration

 ULSI Ultra Large Scale Integration

HITECH University 8
Types of IC
 Analog IC
Can be called Linear and it is Used as Amplifiers,
Timers and Oscillators etc.
 Digital IC
Can be called logical and it is used in
Microprocessors and memories etc.

Some IC s are combinations of both Analog and Digital.
