DWELLING TOGETHER IN UNITY

Psalm 133 This is a study series I have entitled Getting it Together. We have taken Acts 2:44 as our text of challenge. All that believed were together, and had all things common. Last week we learned from Hebrews 10:25 that we are to assemble together each week for worship and encouragement. Now, turning to Psalm 133 we will see that its more than simply being on the same block or sitting in the same building. Look at Psalm 133:1. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Getting together is being in church. Getting along is what church should be all about. To dwell in peace in heaven above, of, that will be glory.. But to dwell in peace with Christians below, well, thats another story. Have you figured this out, yet? We can be brothers in Christ without being twins!
It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

Proverbs 21:9.
It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. Proverbs

21:19. In the Peanuts cartoons Lucy, demanded that Linus change the television channel and threatens him with her fist if he does not do as she says. "What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?" Linus responds. "These five fingers," states Lucy. "Individually they're nothing, but when I curl them together like this into a single unit, they form a weapon that is terrible to behold." "Which channel do you want?" asks Linus quickly. Turning away, he looks at his own fingers and says, "Why can't you guys get organized like that?"
1. Unity is Desirable, v. 1.

Praised. Behold It is a wonder seldom seen, therefore behold it, Spurgeon. Wake up. Look upon this.

DWELLING TOGETHER IN UNITY

Positive. ...how good Unity is good for...

Ourselves.the stress caused by disagreements eats on us. Families...Churches...Converts...An On-looking world.

Pleasant. ...and how pleasant it is. Pleasant Unity is enjoyable to.

God Us

People. For brethren A chorus of ecumenical voices keep harping the unity tune. What they are saying is, "Christians of all doctrinal shades and beliefs must come together in one visible organization, regardless... Unite, unite!" Such teaching is false, reckless and dangerous. Truth alone must determine our alignments. Truth comes before unity. Unity without truth is hazardous. Our Lord's prayer in John 17 must be read in its full context. Look at verse 17: "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth." Only those sanctified through the Word can be one in Christ. To teach otherwise is to betray the Gospel. Charles H. Spurgeon, The Essence of Separation, quoted in The Berean Call, July, 1992, p. 4. Partnership. To dwell together Not simply come together or meet together but dwell together. Mans first sin separated man from God (Adam and Eve). Mans second sin separated man from man (Cain and Abel). Genesis 13:6 tells us that Abraham and Lot were not able to dwell together because they had so many cattle. Abraham solution was, Let there be no strife...between me and thee, and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen: for we be brethren. So their solution was to avoid being together, going their separate ways. In unity. What is unity?
Unionsimply joined together. Tying 2 cats together at their tails is union but definitely not

union
Uniformitybeing alike. Taking 2 cats and painting them the same color, reducing to the same

size, cutting off their tails is uniformity, you dont have unity, just 2 really mad cats!
Unanimitybeing in total agreement. Could two cats ever agree on anything? I dont know, Im

not a cat man.

UnityThe Hebrew word unity denotes harmony in music. The idea true togetherness.

Would you agree with this? There is so much that divides us. People are divided. - Racially. Red, brown yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight. - Economically. The haves and the have nots. - Religiously. Millions of religious ideas. In Christ we are united as one. The big challenge is being one now. Punctuated, v. 1b. Do you see the exclamation mark? Do you remember your English class said about punctuation? Is it not exciting to see Gods work of unity among His people? It is so easy to forget how great this is. And it is easy to allow things to disrupt our unity.
2. Unity is Describable, v. 2-3a.

Like v. 2 and as v. 3. God is painting us a picture of unity. As being precious as the oil of priestly consecration and as refreshing as the early mountain dew, Ryrie Study Bible.

DWELLING TOGETHER IN UNITY

v. 2 sounds messy, doesnt it? Dont try this on your next house guest. They will probably punch you! Get a picture of verse 2 in your mind. Oil was used to formally anoint prophets, priests, and kings in the Old Testament. The Bible says Jesus was anointed...to preach the gospel and that He was anointed with the oil of gladness above His fellows, Luke 4:18; Hebrews 1:9. As a part of Aarons formal consecration he was anointed with fragrant oil. It was holy oil, made by a divine order, Exodus 30. And it was used in such abundance that it literally cover Aaron. And when he walked among the people they knew he was in their presence. How sweet is the presence of our high Priest, Jesus Christ, walking among us! Dew is Gods refreshment system for His creation. Dew falls every night in those hot Mediterreain climates. Mount Hermon was a high mountain in the Galilean range. Mount Zion was a low hill on the outside of the city of Jerusalem. High or low, unity is like Gods mercies, they are new every morning.
3. Unity is Discernable, v. 3b.

There Where? In the place where unity is. The Lord commanded a blessing. When God finds us with the right spirit, all He has to do is command a blessing. Loving, united people are blessed people! Even life for evermore. This is the blessing of all blessings! Salvation.heaven...eternity. Wont it be wonderful there When we all get to heaven Application: 1. A United Nation.United States of America. This Psalm was written by David. During the days of the Judges there was no king in Israel, and every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Israel was 12 separate, divided tribes, who were forged into a united kingdom. How were they united? In their faith...temple, feasts. How are most nations destroyedfrom outside or from within? From within. The greatest threat to America is not outside forces of Islamic terrorists or communism or illegals, but Americans themselves. 2. United Family. Davids own family had often been torn apart. Mocking wife...wicked son raped a daughter (Amon and Tamar) Rebellious son (Absalom). Sin brought with it the seed of disunity. As long as Adam and Eve were close to God they remained close to each other. But as soon as sin came into their hearts and into their marriage, then the immediate result was disharmony and disunity. Think of all the times the Bible records family fraction. Cain and Abel Ishmael and Isaac...Esau and Jacob...Leah and Rachel Joseph and his brothers. And that is only the first book of the Bible. 3. United Church. Even before Jesus ascended back to heaven, His apostles were disputing over who was the greatest. Paul mentions the Corinthians church in disunity over personalities and preferences. Its not our job to create unity, but it is our job to keep it. Ephesians 4:3 is Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

DWELLING TOGETHER IN UNITY

There is an artificial unity which is the failing work of men. And there is an authentic unity which is the work of the Spirit. A church has unity on the basic of what is listed in Ephesians 4:4-6. (1) One body (2) One Spirit (3) One hope (4) One Lord (5) One faith (6) One baptism (7) One God 4. United Heart, Psalm 86:11. Unite my heart to fear thy name. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways, James 1:8. A heart fixed on Jesus Christ. Savior...Lord...Friend...King. Coming together is a start..Staying together is a progress..Being together is a challenge..Working together is success There are two ways of being united -- one is by being frozen together, and the other is by being melted together. What Christians need is to be united in brotherly love, and then they may expect to have power. D. L. Moody.
