Beginner Week 2 People and Places Lesson 4 Favourite Places Learning Objectives: To practise talking about favourite places To practice using language to express write and perform poetry

Procedure
T tells ss about one of the most interesting places they have been to. Show pictures if possible. T elicits from SS their favourite spots and reasons for liking them . Memory game put ss in groups of 5 6 and have them go around the circle, say their name and what their favourite place is. Then have them repeat and remember what the favourite place of each other person is. Eg. My favourite place is the beach, Alis favourite place is the desert, Jummas favourite place is Paris, etc Some favourite travel destinations Pre teach beaches, beautiful, culture, history, temples, outdoor, etc. Show World Map and locate Sydney, Bangkok and Dubai. SS read the text (B2.4.1) once and match each picture on PP (1,2,3) with one of the three reading texts (A, B, C) T/F handout B2.4.1. SS correct answers with their partner then come to the whiteboard to answer one question. If they believe the answer to be false, they must correct the sentence, thus making it true.

Game Back to the Board Write a list of 10 vocabulary words on the board from the reading and/or from discussions/memory game, etc. Relating to favourite places. Two teams. One s from one team sits with back to the board. T writes one of the vocab words above his/her head. Others in his/her team give clues about the word until he guesses and earns a point for the team. Time limits can be imposed to add interest. T writes there is/ there are on the whiteboard. Asks SS to look back at the reading text where there is/there are is underlined. T clarifies that there is applies to singular nouns and there are to plural. T relates this back to the underlined portions. T asks CCQs to check for both meaning and form.

SS, in pairs, use the handout to match there is/there are with items from the reading. Example: In Sydney, there are. beaches. T asks SS to write answers on the whiteboard. T can use this for error correction if necessary. Games and Activities to choose from: Poetry Competition Use the prompts and the sample poem to demonstrate how easy it can be to write a simple poem. Students write a poem (10 lines max). Form groups and have them recite their poems. Choose the best. The best from each group performs to the class and a winner is chosen. *Ss could then go on and write their poems on coloured paper, decorate it and put them all together in a class anthology. Find Someone Who Survey: SS must choose ONE favourite holiday location. SS then walk around the classroom, asking each other questions about his/her favourite holiday location.

Freer practice

Twenty Questions: T chooses ONE favourite holiday location for himself/herself. SS must ask yes/no questions to determine the identity of the location. Use Is there/Are there questions if possible. Example: Are there beaches? No (location: Congo) A list may need to be put on the board.
