This document outlines the introductory lecture for an Electrical Engineering course. It introduces the lecturer and covers the following key points:
- Why study electrical engineering and how integral electrical systems are to modern technologies.
- An Airbus 380 aircraft is used as an example to illustrate the many complex electrical systems on a large commercial aircraft.
- An overview of the course structure, assessment breakdown, textbooks, and expectations for students is provided.

Telecommunications Lecturer: Ted Spooner Intro & Admin bits Elec1111 Elec1111 Rm124A EE email: e.spooner@unsw.edu.au Warning!!! Why Electrical Engineering? Admin Bits Circuit basics TODAY TODAY S AGENDA S AGENDA Why Electrical Engineering? How much do we rely on Electrical Systems? What would the world be like if all electrical systems suddenly stopped working? 2 Why do you do this subject? Electrical systems are an integral part of many modern systems. Why Electrical?????? Many advances in electrical and electronic systems eg computers and semiconductor systems. Small, light weight. Lot of computing power Reliability Flexibility Lots of things need electricity and hence ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS. Hybrid Cars Consider an Airbus 380 Slide Curtesy of Airbus S.A.S 3 Airbus 380 Large Commercial Aircraft contain many electrical systems eg: Power systems Control Systems Communication Systems Computer networks Entertainment systems Airbus 380 Slide Curtesy of Airbus S.A.S Airbus 380 Slide Curtesy of Airbus S.A.S Airbus 380 Slide Curtesy of Airbus S.A.S Airbus Interior????? Airbus 380 4 x 150kVA Main Engine Generators 2 x 120kVA APU Generators Total 840kVA of generation Airbus 380 Slide Curtesy of Airbus S.A.S 4 Ground rules Respect others right to learn. Please keep quiet in lectures. Note: 1 st yr is a greater challenge than HSC!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Survey of students at end of 1 st year) Course Outline An introduction to the art and science of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications. Lab Safety, Measurement, Circuit construction, Interesting stuff. Digital Logic Op amps Intro to Sinusoidal analysis 1st order Transients Superposition, Ls and Cs Node Equations, Thevenin Node Equations & Circuit analysis Circuit analysis Introduction to Control Systems, Kirchhoffs laws continued Introduction to Telecommunications Introduction to EnergySystems Introduction, Circuit Basics Overview +circuit elements, Kirchhoff's Law.
