To Whom It May Concern

I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for Mr. Lutfi Abdullah Hanif, a former
undergraduate student in our program. He graduated in 2013, upon completion of his study he
continues to work as a geologist at Geo Prima Energy-Puskemigas.
I have known Lutfi since 2008 but I came to know him very well when he was helping me as a
research assistant during a few weeks of field work in 2012. It was part of my research in Bukit
Barisan Expedition study in Jambi, Sumatra. Lutfi, along with other students, was responsible to
help me in many aspect of the research. This includes but not limited to conducting topographic
survey using total station, preparing the geological aspect, interpretation of the stratigraphy
relationship of strata exposed in the trench, and other logistics related to the research. I was
very impressed by his performance. Lutfi is an enthusiastic and exceptionally well-organized
student. He works very hard, very knowledgeable yet eager to learn new things. He also
interacts very well with the other team members, which fascinate me and attest to his social,
professional competency and leadership. These characters appear stronger as I know him even
more.
After the completion of the field work, he continues to work on his own research Study Facies
and Deposition environment Cantayan Formation at Cibeet River in West Java. We often discuss
things related to his research, which give me impression that he is capable of conducting an
independent research. Concerning his potential as a teaching assistant, Lutfi has detailed
experience in developing educational materials for lab activities during the time he serve as
teaching assistant at several laboratories in our department. I know from discussions with
colleagues in my department that we think Lutfi was a good teaching assistant and a good
student. I have enjoyed getting to know him as a person and find him as a responsible person
and capable of working entirely on his own in a self-directed manner as well as in a team.
I know that Lutfi maintain a good professional career after his graduation from our program
and I am pleased to know that Lutfi is planning to enroll in graduate school to improve his
knowledge and professional capabilities. I have no doubt that he has the skills, focus, and
determination to successfully complete a masters degree in a timely fashion. Lutfi might not be
the best candidates in term of academic performance but his mentality and personality make
him a special and rare to find candidates. In short, I give Lutfi my highest recommendation.
