1.2 Function Notation

This document provides an introduction to function notation for a Grade 11 math unit. It includes definitions of functions and function notation, examples of evaluating different types of functions, and exercises involving finding function values, arguments, and algebraic expressions within functions. The homework assigned covers evaluating, adding, subtracting and multiplying various functions. The learning objectives are to use function notation, evaluate functions for different inputs, and perform operations on functions.

1.2 Function Notation

Date:

Homework: 1.1 Pages 10-13 Questions #1, 2, 4, 6, 9

1.2 Pages 22-24 Questions #1(c, d, e, f), 2, 3, 5(c, d), 6, 7, 10, 12, 16, 17

Learning Objectives/Success Criteria: At the end of this lesson I will be able to:
o Use function notation
o Evaluate functions for different input values
o Add, subtract, multiple and divide functions

Recall:

Examples:

Function

Characteristics:

Non-examples

Function Notation: the notation f(x) is use to represent the value of a dependent variable (output) for a given
independent variable (input).

f (x) is read as f at x or f of x

f is a function of the variable x

y = 3x + 2

is in relation notation

is in function notation.
f (x) = 3x + 2

Evaluating Functions
Example 1: Evaluating f (x) means you plug in a specific value of x into the function f.
a) Create a table of values for f (x) = 3x + 2
b) Evaluate:
f (x)
x
i. f(1)

ii. f(3)

Piecewise functions: Functions that are split into different pieces defined by different domains.

b) f(1)

c) f(2)

d) f(-2)+f(5)

Finding the argument: The x in f(x) is called the argument of the
function. If you are asked to determine the argument, you are looking
for the value of x that satisfies the function f(x).

Consider the functions f (x) = 3x +1 and g(x) = 2 x . Determine the values such that:
a) f(x)=0

b) f (x) = g(x)

c) ( f (x))2 = 2g(x)
