Py Gas Study

Pyrolysis gasoline is a byproduct of naphtha cracking that contains C5-C12 hydrocarbons. It can be upgraded to produce valuable products like dicyclopentadiene, piperylene, and aromatic solvents. India imports significant quantities of these products. One way to add value to pyrolysis gasoline is to separate the C5 fraction and process it into dicyclopentadiene and piperylene. The remaining stream can then be further upgraded in a PGHU. Integrating such an upgrading facility with an existing polymer complex could provide favorable economics.

Introduction

Pyrolysis gasoline (Py-Gas) is a by-product of high temperature naphtha cracking.


Pygas is a naphtha-range product containing C5- to C12-range aromatics, di-olefins,
olefins, and paraffins.
The focus of this review is to list down the up gradation routes for the Py-Gas as a
methodology towards value addition in existing polymer complexes.

Market Scenario
DPCD:

India imported dicyclopentadiene DCPD worth USD 5,801,719 with total quantity of
4,162,261. China is the largest supplier of dicyclopentadiene dcpd accounting for
imports worth USD 3,092,405 followed by Japan and Taiwan which exported
dicyclopentadiene dcpd worth USD 1,487,841 and USD 1,221,473 respectively.
All shipments were imported at Nhava Sheva Sea. No exports reported for this product.
PIPERYLENE:
India imported piperylene worth USD 1,325 with total quantity of 15. Germany is the
largest supplier of piperylene accounting for imports worth USD 1,234 followed by Brazil
and Taiwan which exported piperylene worth USD 86 and USD 5 respectively.
Banglore Air Cargo accounted for 93.2% of imports followed by Bombay Air Cargo and
Kolkata Air Cargo which account for 6.5% and 0.4% of imports respectively. No exports
reported for this product.
ISOAMYLENES:
India imported isoamylenes worth USD 4,874,588 with total quantity of 2,484,221.
Germany is the largest supplier of isoamylenes accounting for imports worth USD
4,561,749 followed by China and Belgium which exported isoamylenes worth USD
248,966 and USD 63,873 respectively.
Nhava Sheva Sea accounted for 100% of imports. No exports reported for this product.

Value Additions
I)

Separation of C5 from Raw Py-Gas and subsequent processing of C5 into


valuable components such as DCPD, PIPERYLENE. The remnant stream devoid
of C5 can be further processed in PGHU.

Way Forward
The feed for above process is a side stream from Naphtha cracker which is
approximately 19% by wt. of all the products produced. In order to have favorable
economics the possibility of integrating polymer complex can be explored based on
proximity such as HPL with BCPL and Gail with IOCL.
