Lesson Planning Netball

The lesson plan is for a Year 10 HPE netball class. The learning objective is for students to position themselves to both defend their opponent and keep their eyes on the person throwing the ball. The lesson includes a warm up run and stretches, followed by drills on one-on-one defense and using the outside arm to intercept passes. The lesson concludes with a discussion on the skills practiced. The teacher evaluates that students were engaged but notes their verbal explanations of netball concepts could improve.

Date: 6/9/2016

Time: 15 min

Learning Area: HPE

Topic: Netball
Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)
Demonstrate and explain how the elements of effort, space, time, objects
and people can enhance movement and sequences (ACPMP084)

Students prior knowledge and experience:

Students have been performing netball as their Physical Education topic for
approximately three weeks according to my mentor teacher. Students should have
knowledge on rules, gameplay and basic skills.

Learning purpose:
Performing a range of movements and analysing technique based on an
understanding of take-off and body position

Learning objectives:

Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson,

students will be able to: position

I will know that the objective has been

complete when I can see students using
themselves in a way were they can both appropriate defensive stances and
defend their opponent as well as keeping movements to guard their opponents
eyes on the person throwing the ball

Preparation and Resources:

- Netball (1 per group of students)
Cones / markers (2 per group of students)
Access to outdoor basketball / Netball courts
Long Rod so that I my turn the basketball hoops around into netball hoops if
it has not previously been done
Whistle

Catering for diversity

With in the setting of this class there are a number of ESL students. To
combat this diversity I must ensure that sports specific terms are lowered down to
be presented at a more basic level of english, as well as incorporating
demonstrations within my explanations so that these students can gain a visual
concept of how to perform certain skills and drills.
Class has a wide range in the level of skill so I must ensure to help students
who are struggling more with the particular skills being practiced.
Class has one student who is recovering from a very severe injury (torn ACL)
and as a result the student cannot participate in activities, however he has begun
to walk without the aid of crutches again. To cater for his needs as a student I will
ask him to assist me in setup / pack up processes as well as helping his peers by
providing feedback

Learning Experiences:
Timing
:
2 min

1. Introduction:
As part of my introduction, I will be required to introduce my self to the
students as for many of them, it will be there first session that I have
been apart of. In doing this, I will ensure that I speak in an enthusiastic
and engaging manner to capture the attention of the class. As part of the
introduction I will explain to the students what the objective of my minor
lesson is to them.

2. Sequence of learning experiences:

We are going to start with a basic aerobic exercise where the
students will do run throughs on the netball court. This warm up
requires students to run from one end of the court to the other at 70%
of their full speed, followed by 80%, 90% and then finally 100%.
This will then lead into the students partaking in their dynamic
stretches. This will include stretches such as leg swings (both forward
swings and side swings) as well as doing calf stretches. This will be
done to minimise the risk of students injury.
As part of our first activity students will do a one-on-one defence
drill. Students are to be placed in teams of three (1 attacker, 1 thrower
and 1 defenders) an are to find a space of roughly 10 m that they can
use. The defender must guard the attacker whilst still positioning their
body to face the thrower. The defender must try to intercept or knock
the ball out of play. After three attempts the group will rotate the role of
each member (Thrower becomes defender --> Defender becomes
attacker--> Attacker becomes thrower).
The next drill that students will partake in is the use of outside
arm drill. Students will stay with in their previous groups of three with
two throwers (spaced 10m apart) and one defender. The defender is to
run in a figure-of-8 action around and in between the the throwers,
using the throwers as points of circulation. The throwers are to
continuously throw the ball back and forth passively between each
other at chest height. As the defender proceeds around each thrower,
they must use their outside arm to intercept the ball. This must be
done ten times before roles are switched.

3. Lesson conclusion:

1 min

To conclude the lesson I shall talk to the students on what skills were
practiced in the drills were performed. I will also ask them how they
perceived the lesson on what they liked and did not like about the lesson.
From there I will hand the lesson back over to my mentor teacher.

Lesson Evaluation:
-

During the lesson students were engaged and had fun partaking in the drills
and activities that were provided
ESL students were able to understand activities through the use of
demonstrations
My verbal explanations could have been better though as my content
knowledge on the sport of netball was not as good as it is in other sporting /
teaching areas.
