EEE 309 Communication Theory: Instructor: Tishna Sabrina Summer 2016

This document summarizes a lecture on phase-locked loops (PLLs). It discusses that PLLs are used to track the phase and frequency of an incoming carrier signal and for synchronous demodulation of AM signals. A PLL has three basic components: a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a phase detector or comparator, and a loop filter. The PLL works as a feedback system to match the phase and frequency of the VCO output to the input signal. Carrier acquisition in DSB-SC modulation can be achieved using PLLs with either signal squaring or a Costas loop.

Phase-Locked Loop (PLL)

To track the phase and the frequency of the

carrier component of an incoming signal.
A useful device for synchronous demodulation
of AM signals.
A PLL has three basic components:
1. A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO)
2. A multiplier, serving as a phase detector
(PD) or a phase comparator
3. A loop filter H(s)

PLL Circuit: Typical Feedback System

If the signal fed back is not equal to the input

signal, the difference (/error) will change the
signal fed back until it is close to the input signal.
