What is offered
BALLUFF offers two types of self monitoring systems. Both systems use a series of
short duration test pulses which are overlayed on the output of the sensor. The
duration and frequency of these pulses is such that even very fast PLC's or relays
will not be activated. The test pulses are inverted from the output state of the
sensor and therefore switch function can be monitored in either the open or closed
state.
System BES-113-917 uses sensors that generate their own test pulses. System
BES-113-918 uses sensors with an additional input lead for the monitor to generate
the test pulses for the system.

System BES-113-917
General Data
Sensors
The proximity sensors basically correspond to the normal three wire DC type and
have the same functions (ie. normally open or normally closed). The sensor itself
contains special circuitry that artificially damps and undamps the oscillator. This
damping and undamping of the oscillator creates a series of pulses that are over
layed on the output signal.
The duration and frequency of these test pulses is such that even the fastest PLC's
or relays will not be activated. The test pulses are always inverted from the output
state of the sensor allowing the sensor to be tested in either the normally open or
normally closed condition.
Monitor
The overlayed test pulses from the sensors are processed by monitor BES-113-917.
This monitor has LED's to display the switch function for each of the 14 inputs
available. When no test pulses are received from a sensor (indicating a damaged
sensor or broken cable) a seperate "Sensor Fault" LED turns on and the 7 segment
display on the monitor indicates the number of the failed input. If a fault is
detected with the monitor itself, a "Device Fault" LED turns on and the 7 segment
display indicates the address location of the fault.
When no faults are present, 2 positive opening contact relays in the monitor are
switched. These relays make up the main contact circuit and are normally linked
to the "emergency off" circuit on the machine control. The function of these relays
is indicated by the "HKS Control" LED on the monitor. In case of sensor failure or
cable break the "HKS Control" LED goes off and the relay contacts open to
interrupt the emergency circuit.

General Data
Sensors
The proximity sensors basically correspond to the normal three wire DC type and
have the same functions (ie. normally open or normally closed). The sensor itself
contains special circuitry that accepts an external pulse that artificially damps and
undamps the oscillator. This pulse is supplied to the sensor by a special monitor
via a fourth wire. This damping and undamping of the oscillator
creates a series of pulses that are overlayed on the output signal.
The duration and frequency of these test pulses (f=130 Hz, t=7.5 msec) is such that
even the fastest PLC's or relays will not be activated. The test pulses are always
inverted from the output state of the sensor allowing the sensor to be tested in
either the normally open or normally closed condition.
Monitors
The overlayed test pulses are sent to the sensor and analyzed by a special monitor
unit. The monitors have LED's to display the switch function for each of the
inputs available. When no faults are present, 2 positive opening contact relays in
the monitor are switched. These relays make up the main contact cicuit and are
normally linked to the "emergency off" circuit on the machine control. If the test
pulses are not received by the monitor (indicating a damaged sensor or broken
wire) the positive opening contact relays open to "break" the emergency circuit.
BALLUFF offers several monitors to meet your needs. Monitor BES-113-918
accepts two proximity switch inputs. Test pulses are generated by the monitor
only after the customers machine controller sends a start signal (24 V DC, 30M
sec) through the monitor at the start of each program cycle.
Monitor BES-113-919 operates the same as BES-113-918 except it is designed to
accept three proximity switch inputs.
Monitor BES-113-920 accepts two proximity switch inputs. However this monitor
generates test pulses by itself and therefore does not require a separate start
signal from the customer controller.
