Leo: I Love This Time of Afternoon

Leo describes his love for the time of afternoon when lights start coming on in neighboring windows as night falls. He finds it hopeful and beautiful to see these "little squares of light" trying to blot out the darkness. He compares it to incomplete paintings, like those of Michelangelo, where the unfinished lines hovering in the background take on their own beauty. A woman who is two-thirds done, or a young woman on the verge of knowing herself, possesses an attractiveness to men for this very reason.

Leo: I love this time of afternoon

From In the Next Room or the vibrator play, by Sarah Ruhl

Leo describes his aesthetic of beauty. Note: In this scene, he is

speaking to Mrs. Givings; however, her interjections are not of
importance. I have indicated where she speaks by breaking the text,
but the monologue functions as if she were merely listening.

I love this time of afternoon, when the world is becoming dark,

and you can see otuside your window - lights in the neighboring
windows coming on. One yellow - one almost white - little
squares of light, other peoples lives - sheltered against the night,
so hopeful. Ridiculous, isnt it, to have so much hope, to think a
little square of light could blot out the darkness - and yet -
another comes on - and see -

Look - there - another window lit - golden - the rest o fthe house
dark - an incomplete painting. I love incomplete paintings - why
do painters always insist on finishing paintings? Its
unaccountable - life is not like that!

And the ones Michelangelo never finished - do you know them -

ghosts of lines hovering in the background. Have you ever seen
Virgin and Child with the Angels?

Oh, you must go, and upon arrival, you must go directly to see
that painting - the incomplete lines of God - they cannot be filled
in because they would be too beautiful, they would shock the
senses, and so they are almost there - women or angels -
exchanging confidences, coming into being. A woman who is
two-thirds done is nearer to God! A young woman on the verge of
knowing herself is the most attractive thing on this earth to a
man for this very reason.

Jason

(Jason is at Becca and Howies house for the first time, talking to Becca on
her couch. They have been making small talk until he begins confessing)

I used to have a shirt just like that one. The one hes wearing in the
picture.

(Pause. Jason avoids her gaze. After a while, he speaks.)

I mightve been going too fast. That day. Im not sure, but I mightve
been. Sothats one of the things I wanted to tell you.

(pause)

Its a thirty zone. And I mightve been going thirty-three. Or thirty-two. I

would usually look down, to check, and If I was a little over, then Id slow
down obviously. But I dont remember checking on your block, so its
possible I was going a little too fast. And then the dog came out, really
quick, and so I swerved a little to avoid him, not knowing, obviously

(pause)

So thats something I thought you should know. I mightve been going a

little over the limit. I cant be positive either way though.
