WELCOME TO RIFF

You are a part of something smaller. This year we

received more entries than ever before. We are
screening more films. We have entries from more
countries than in the past. We have more events this
year. We’ve pre-sold more tickets.  We have more
judges and volunteers. Just about every statistic is
bigger than in years past. And yet RIFF continues to
feel smaller. The community that RIFF has created
is tighter. Faces have become familiar. And when
you submit a film, attend a screening, or sponsor
an event you are a part of the effort to build an
intimate community of people who love film.

The vision for RIFF has always been small in scale

and small in scope. We don’t intend to reach
the masses. If we do, so be it, but our purpose
is to create an environment for movie lovers to
see films or have their films seen. Our mindful
approach has made us too small to fail, because
as long as great independent films are being
watched and enjoyed in Fredericksburg, we have
succeeded. We hope that you feel the same.

FROM THE FREDERICKSBURG ATHENAEUM
Since our inception in March of 2003, it has been
the Athenaeum’s strong feeling that keeping
“good things” here in our city requires three
things: Energy, commitment and innovation!

The Athenaeum Films Project, launched earlier this

year has been constructed to find and embrace
those things in an effort to keep opportunities in the
cinematic arts for young and older alike right here.

The project encompasses two separate endeavors:

First, continuing to bring events in original
independent film to a local audience through our
very own Rappahannock Independent Film Festival;
and secondly, producing several independent films
with both local and global profiles of our own.

If you are here experiencing RIFF 2010, you can be

assured that this event provided the kind of challenge
and reward that comes from expanding our notion
of who we are as a cultural community. Our staff
and volunteers have worked for nearly a year to
develop this opportunity for filmmakers and film-
lovers alike. And their hard work and commitment
has been buoyed by the Athenaeum’s organizational
commitment to provide the right kind of platform.

In the Fall of this year, the Athenaeum Films Project

will fully launch our film production work, providing a
platform to integrate students and professionals alike
for the best possible creative learning experience.

The Fredericksburg Athenaeum has always looked

to respond to the needs of our city and regional
arts. We hope that the Athenaeum Films Project
proves a catalyst for the continuation of our city’s
great arts tradition, and the kind of newness that
fulfills our growing community expectations.

Virginia. He is a longtime resident of Stafford, Virginia.

John Kennedy Toole: The Omega Point - a documentary

about the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, based on the book
Ken and Thelma by Fredericksburger Joel Fletcher.

About the film: Twelve years after the John Kennedy Toole's suicide, A
Confederacy of Dunces was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, thanks in
part to the extraordinary efforts of Walker Percy who received the manuscript
from Mr. Toole’s mother, Thelma Toole, a character as rich and complex as
any in the novel. Through the eyes of Ken's mother, Thelma and those of his
friends and colleagues, the film explores Toole's beloved New Orleans, his
extra-ordinary work and the questions that remain about his tragic death.

Joel L. Fletcher, in his book, Ken

and Thelma, recreated his friendship
with the Pulitzer Prize-winning
author and his long association
with Toole's indomitable mother.
For the last 12 years, Joel has
made Fredericksburg his home.

THE ATHENAEUM FILMS PROJECT — RIFF AND BEYOND
37 films from 12 countries; 3 days of screenings; 1 absolutely fabulous
filmmaking workshop for students; 5 juried prizes; with a musical
concert and after-parties to boot. RIFF 2010 is upon us.

For myself, it has been a pleasure to see RIFF 2010 come to fruition. I
count it as one of those truly “good things” that define a place.

Since our inception in March of 2003, it has been the Athenaeum's

strong feeling that keeping "good things" here in our city requires three
things: Energy, commitment and innovation! This Fall, The Athenaeum
Films Project, comes into being. This program has been constructed
to find and embrace opportunities in the cinematic arts, for young and
older alike, right here in our own backyard embodying all three.

The project is built in two ways: first, by continuing to bring events in

original independent film to a local audience and, secondly, by producing
several independent films with both local and global profiles of our own.

Several literary documentaries over the next two years will be created,
providing a platform for local and regional students to work alongside
professional filmmakers. It’s a natural enough progression, lifting up from
the coalescing work of RIFF and our growing community of film artists.

So, on the eve of this third festival, we at the Athenaeum look

beyond and toward this new and exciting adventure in local arts
capacity. We hope that the Athenaeum Films Project proves a catalyst
for the continuation of our city’s great arts tradition, and the kind
of newness that fulfills our growing community expectations.

We hope you will join us for this exciting next chapter.
