5-E MODEL
LESSON PLAN QUESTIONS
1. Explain what teachers should do during the engagement part of a lesson.

Teachers should attempt to activate prior knowledge (which is a major factor in comprehension in any subject) to
discover preconceptions or misconceptions. To activate prior knowledge teachers should initiate brainstorming,
asking specific questions and noting responses or engaging students in a problem, activity, or scenario to elicit what
they know. This phase of the 5-E Model should generate interest, frame an idea, promote curiosity and motivate
students’ learning of a certain topic.
2. Explain what teachers should do during the exploration part of a lesson.

Teachers should challenge student preconceptions, observe and listen to students as they interact, facilitate learning
and encourage cooperative learning. Through this phase students move from memorizing information to meaningful
learning and begin the journey of connecting learning events rather than remembering bits and pieces. Teachers
must listen to student ideas to identify misconceptions, help students to reconstruct their knowledge, encourage
discussion, demonstration and hands-on activities.
3. Explain what teachers should do during the explanation part of a lesson.

Teachers should directly introduce a concept, process, or skill to guide students toward a deeper understanding,
present information that students are unlikely to discover on their own, address concerns of cognitive overload or
misconceptions, encourage students to explain their observations and findings in their own words, provide
definitions, new words, and explanations, listen and build upon discussion from students. Students in this phase will
be allowed to demonstrate conceptual skills, behaviors, knowledge or conceptual understanding, connect prior
knowledge and background to new discoveries, communicate new understandings, and connect informal language
to formal language.
4. Explain what teachers should do during the expansion part of a lesson.

Teachers should organize the lesson in increasing order of complexity so students can develop a meaningful context
into which new learning can be connected. During this phase, background knowledge is reinforced and more
concepts can be introduced. Students extend and explain the concept being explored, communicate new
understanding with formal language, use previously learned information as a vehicle to enhance additional learning
and use terms and definitions previously acquired.
5. Explain what teachers should do during the evaluation part of a lesson.

Teachers should assess understanding of new concepts by observation or open ended response, observe student
behaviors as they explore and apply new concepts and skills, assess students’ knowledge and encourage students to
assess their own learning. Students assess their understanding and teacher evaluates student progress toward
educational objectives. Evaluations may take the form of quizzes, tests, observations of performance, writings,
interviews, or some other form. Without a valid assessment neither instructors nor students can be confident that
objectives are being addressed and met.
6. During which 5e part of the lesson plan will actual concept of the lesson will be formed.
Elaboration/Expansion/Extend because background and new knowledge is reinforced and use of new words and
definitions is now encouraged.
7. During which part of the 5e lesson plan, students are more involved, provide your reason for your
argument.
In my opinion, I would say Exploration. In the engage phase, students are barely discovering what the new topic
will be about. The explanation part is a little more rigorous with many more questions so that the concept is
completely introduced. Exploration is between Engage and Explain. Students already got familiar with the topic
and now they want to apply more of what they know and even start learning more.
8. During which part of the 5e lesson plan, teachers are more involved, provide your reason for your
argument.
Explain. I believe there is a more direct teacher-centered instruction. Teachers clarify preconceptions and
misconceptions, scaffold students’ prior knowledge and provide new information.
9. Dr. Chamblee believes that evaluation part of 5e lesson should be incorporated throughout the lesson. If
you agree or disagree, provide your reasons.
I agree with Dr. Chamblee. Teachers must evaluate students’ learning in every phase so they can modify the next
activity of the lesson according to the results of the previous one.
1. Engage: Teachers evaluate their prior knowledge (preconceptions and misconceptions) and problem-solving
skills.
2. Explore: Teachers evaluate if students are making connections as they interact with others or asking questions.
3. Explain: Teachers evaluate students’ understanding by make sure misconceptions are already addressed and
also evaluate their explanations in regards to any observations or work performed.
4. Expand/Elaborate/Extend: Teachers evaluate the students’ formal explanations.
5. Evaluate: Teacher evaluates using a summative or formative assessments to check for understanding of the
objectives taught.
