Customer Service is an important part of any business. In this
exercise you will be expected to behave in a thorough and business like manner.
Your task is to configure and install a computer system for a staff
faculty area. You will be assigned a faculty and will be expected to negotiate the installation details with the teacher in charge.
Below is a checklist of issues you will need to deal with.
Issue Notes and Comments
PRE-INSTALLATION Introduction to teacher in charge: Date : Explain what you will be doing and whether it is convenient for the teacher Time : to talk to you now about their requirements. If not, make an appointment with the teacher (don’t expect teacher to be available when it is convenient to you – you may have to do this at lunch or after school). Where will the computer be placed: Workspace : Is there : A desk with enough space and a chair. Sufficient lighting, comfortable heating/cooling, out of the way Network and Power : of traffic (ie, what is the ergonomics of the placement) Is there a power point nearby with enough free ports. If not, will the teacher buy a Cabling issues : powerboard (we DON’T supply these) Is there a network port nearby with a free port – or will the Older computer : teacher buy a small switch (We usually don’t supply these). Can these cables be run safely without creating a trip hazard Is the space secure from theft. Printer: Does this new computer replace an older one. If so, see Mr Carpenter as to where the older one will go. If not, will they need a network switch to allow them to plug in additional computer ? (ie if there is nowhere to plug it in, and they wont buy a switch, they have to SWAP! Is there an existing printer. If Special Requirements : so, where will you get drivers for this printer ? Is the printer to be shared with other computers in the room? Are there any special requirements related to desktop shortcuts, specific applications, Internet Favourites. BEFORE ENTERING THE ROOM Before you take the system down to Computer Make : the teacher’s room: The following issues need to be Model : considered : Do you have the correct hardware – system, monitor, Serial Number : keyboard, mouse, power cables, network cable? Is there a working operating Computer Name : system on the computer? Have you tested it works and will log onto the network? Applications Installed : Does the computer connect to the internet and are the proxy settings correct ? Do the applications work – you Drivers required : must test at least Word and Internet Explorer. Is the resolution correct on the monitor – 1024x768 Does the sound work ? Does the floppy and CDROM work ? Do you have drivers for any printers required copied over to the hard drive unde the folder c:\DRIVERS INSTALLATION Make an appointment BEFORE you turn Date : up with the computer Time : Work quickly and quietly – don’t goof around. Don’t get involved in troubleshooting Computer Functions correctly (Y/N): and other computer problems the staff may be having. Ask a teacher BEFORE you move any Successful Logon (Y/N) paper documents, books etc. Set up the computer Connect to Internet (Y/N) Test the computer will start up, connect to the network, Surf the web, start up Prints Correctly (Y/N) word. Print a test document to installed Issues Encountered : printer. Log out and get a teacher to log in and test the machine. Take away any packaging you brought with you – do NOT fill up the staffroom’s bin – take your junk to the Big Bin. Take away any old computer hardware that is to be removed. Tidy up around the work area. Straighten up the monitor, keyboard and mouse so the job looks professional. Log-out of the system, but leave it on at the login prompt. POST INSTALLATION Get the teacher in charge and let them Teacher Checked System (Y/N) know you have finished. If possible, get them to log in and test the system. Have them sign this sheet as proof of a job well done.
