Problem (1):

Steam at a rate of 60 kg/h, at 200oC, and 1 bar enters the tube side of a shell and
tube heat exchanger. The steam is used to heat cold water flowing on the shell side;
the stream leaves as saturated liquid. Neglect pressure drop of the steam on tube
side and the water on the shell side of the heat exchanger. How much heat must be
transferred from the steam to the water side?

Use steam tables to find inlet and exit enthalpy. (h1 = 2875 kJ/kg –h2 +417.5 kJ/kg).

Problem (2)

Liquid water is fed to a boiler at 23oC under pressure of 1,bar and is converted at
constant pressure to a saturated steam. Calculate h for this process and the heat
input required for producing 1500m3/h of steam at the exit conditions. Assume that
the inlet velocity of liquid entering the boiler is negligible and that the steam is
discharged through 0.15 m ID (inner diameter) pipe. Inlet and exit pipes are at the
same level.

Use steam tables to get the specific enthalpy of water at 23oC and 10 bar. (h1 =96.2
kJ/kg).

Use steam tables to get the specific enthalpy of saturated steam at 10 bar(h2 =
2776.2 kJ/kg, v= 0.1943 m3/kg).
Problem (3)

Consider the combustion of liquid ethanol as shown in the following reaction

scheme:

C 2H5OH (l) + 3 O2(g)  CO2(g) + 3H2O (g)

Use heat of formation and heat of combustion to determine the standard heat of
reaction.

Standard heat of formation of water =-285.84 kJ/mol.

Standard heat of formation of carbon dioxide =-393.51 kJ/mol.

Standard heat of formation of ethanol =-277.63kJ/mol.

Problem (4)

If 240 mol/s CO2 is produced in the following reaction where reactants and products
are all at 25oC, and no CO2 is present in the feed system,

2 C 4H10 (g) + 13 O2(g)  8 CO2(g) + 10H2O (l)

What is the standard rate of change in enthalpy?

Use the values of standard heat of formation in the last problem.

Standard heat of formation of Butane =-124.7kJ/mol.

Problem (5):
Gas phase reaction is taking place in a continuous reactor. Stoichiometric
proportions of CO2 and H2 are fed to the reactor at 400oC. The reaction
proceeds to 80% completion. Given 1 mol of CO2, estimate the heat that must
be provided or removed, if the gas exit streams are to be kept at 500oC.
Perform the energy balance using heat of reaction method at two reference
temperatures (500oC and 25oC) and the heat of formation method.
CO2+4H2 2H2O + CH4
Component a b c Hof
CO2 36.11 0.04233 -2.887 x 10-5 -393.5
H2 28.84 0.0000765 0.3288 x 10-5 00.00
H2 O 33.46 0.006880 0.7604 x 10-5 -241.83
CH4 34.31 0.054690 0.3661 x 10-5 -74.85
Problem (6):
Liquid methanol at 25oC is heated and vaporized for use in a chemical reaction.
How much heat is required to heat and vaporize 2 kmol/h of methanol to
600oC.
Cp(methanol(l))= 0.07586 + 16.83 x 10-5 t (kJ)
Cp(methanol(g))= 0.68 + 0.2259 t -1.31 x 10-4t2- 3.71 x 10-8t3

Boiling point = 64.7 oC hvapor =36.14 kJ/mol
