Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration

About This Tutorial

In this tutorial you will go through the initial installation and configuration of LiveProfessor. You
will also create the various folders required and copy the plugins to their respective folder.
Please make sure that you have read and completed the Introduction to the Tutorials before
continuing. All of the software that is required for this tutorial will be provided with this
tutorial. You, of course, will need to supply the necessary hardware.
Installation
Ensure that you have all of the applications and plugins required and noted in the Introduction
– unzipped and ready to go.
Section A: Install ASIO4ALL
You will install ASIO4ALL.
1. Install ASIO4ALL_2_10_English.exe.
Tip: Just follow the prompts.
2. Section B is now completed.
Observation: The installation will create a shortcut on the desktop to the ASIO4ALL v2
Instruction Manual. Please delete this shortcut, as it is not required.
Section B: Install LiveProfessor
You will now install LiveProfessor.
1. Install LiveProfessor_FREE_1.0.3.exe.
Tip: Just follow the prompts.
2. Important: Do NOT launch LiveProfessor yet though.
3. Section A is now completed.
Observation: The installation will create a shortcut on the desktop to the LiveProfessor
application. Do not delete this shortcut as you will be using it frequently.
Section C: Create the Plugins Folder
You will create the required plugins folder.
1. On Drive C, create a new folder called VST_Plugins.
Observation: Please include the underscore, the "_" – using the Shift-plus-minus. Believe it not,
computers do not like spaces – in either folder names or filenames.
§ Path: C:\VST_Plugins.
2. Copy the four supplied plugins to this folder.
3. Section C is now completed.
Section D: Create the Project Folder
As mentioned previously, it is recommended that you create your own Projects folder and this
is what you will be doing here. This, and the other tutorials will assume that you have a Projects
folder in the location listed below.
1. On Drive C, create a new folder called Projects.
Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration
§ Path: C:\Projects.
2. Open the Projects folder.
3. Inside the Projects folder, create another folder called Backing Tracks.
4. Copy the acoustic-gtr1.wav and acoustic-gtr2.wav files to this folder.
5. Close the Projects folder.
6. Section D is now completed.
Lesson 1: The LiveProfessor Screen Area and Window Layout
The following is a diagram of the LiveProfessor screen display area.

To get the most out of LiveProfessor, you will need to understand and become familiar with the
LiveProfessor window layout. If you are familiar with the Microsoft Windows environment, you
should also be familiar with most of the elements of LiveProfessor's screen layout. Just to be
absolutely sure, the key elements are listed in the following diagram:

Page 2
Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration
Here is a listing of the six major elements of the LiveProfessor window layout:
A. The Menu bar.
B. The Menu items.
C. The Status bars.
D. The Close, Minimize and Maximize buttons.
E; The Current Project name.
F. The Panels.
F: The LiveProfessor Workspace.
Observation: You will be referring to these elements often in these tutorials – so review any
that you might not be too familiar with.
As you will see in a subsequent tutorial, the upper right-hand corner of the screen [E] – will
contain the name of the current project. On first launch of LiveProfessor – this area of the
workspace will be blank.

However, when you create a new project or open an existing one – this area of the screen will
be populated with the name of the new or existing project.

Tip: This point is worth mentioning as LiveProfessor does not use many of the standard
Window’s conventions for screen handling. Therefore, this is the only area of the screen that
will display the name of a new, current or existing project. And personally, I prefer it this way.
Lesson 2: Launch and exit LiveProfessor (Observational Only)
To launch LiveProfessor, simply locate the desktop shortcut. Each and every time you exit – or
close LiveProfessor, a Confirm dialog will appear twice – first asking if you want to save the
Untitled Project or an existing project and second, asking if you want to exit the application.
Observation: This is a built-in safety feature of LiveProfessor to ensure that do indeed want to
exit the application. So, you will be asked to confirm these each and every time you exit
LiveProfessor.
Tip: From this point on, it will be understood that you know how to launch and exit the
LiveProfessor application and will be able to respond appropriately to the two Confirm dialogs
that are displayed when exiting the application.
Observation: There are two other folders created during the first launch of LiveProfessor:
a) The first folder is called LiveProfessor and is located in the My Documents folder.
§ This folder will hold, among other things, the Library files. More on this later.
Page 3
Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration
b) The second folder is also called LiveProfessor and is located in C:\Documents and
Settings\[username]\Application Data.
§ This second folder is a very important folder as it stores all of the various configuration
settings that are made in LiveProfessor. I will show you how to make a backup of this folder
later.
Lesson 3: Saving a Project (Observational Only)
Saving a project in LiveProfessor is identical to the saving of any file using Microsoft Windows.
The use of the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+S) is common to all Windows’ environments and is a
much more efficient way of saving a project in LiveProfessor. The same principle is also
applicable to renaming a project through the use of Save as… option. Both of these functions
are available through the Project Menu option.
Keyboard: Save project – Ctrl+S.
Section E: First Launch of LiveProfessor
Here you will have the opportunity of launching LiveProfessor for the first time. You will also
learn about maximizing the screen.
1. Locate the shortcut on the desktop and launch LiveProfessor.
2. Close LiveProfessor.
3. Re-launch LiveProfessor.
4. Section E is now completed.
Section F: Screen Position
On the first launch of LiveProfessor, the screen area is not maximized. You will configure
LiveProfessor to open with the screen maximized.
1. Go to Options.
2. Select Maximize to full screen.
Observation: The LiveProfessor screen will now be maximized.
3. Exit and re-open LiveProfessor.
Observation: The LiveProfessor will launch with the screen maximized.
4. Section F is now completed.
Section G: Audio Configuration
You will now configure the audio component of LiveProfessor. You will be using the integrated
audio card that comes with most PC-based systems and motherboards. If you are not using the
integrated audio device, you will have to make the necessary alterations to your particular
audio configuration.
Remember: As mentioned in the Introduction, any mention of the audio configuration will be in
reference to the integrated audio device.
1. Go to Options
2. Select Audio options.
Observation: The Audio settings dialog is displayed. Notice that the ASIO settings option has
already been pre-selected for you.

Page 4

3. From the ASIO device drop-down box, select ASIO4ALL v2.

Observation: The Audio settings Status area will be updated to reflect the ASIO device selected
in Step 3.

4. Select the Inputs & Outputs option.

Observation: This screen displays all of the inputs and outputs that are available according to
the installed audio device.

Page 5
Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration

5. Leaving the Inputs as they are – de-select outputs 0 3 to 0 8 by left-clicking on each in turn
to disable them.
6. Observation: This is a slight pause – or delay – after the mouse button is clicked and before
that output is disabled.
7. Select the Default audio patch option.
Observation: This screen displays the default audio inputs and outputs.

8. Select 1 Input 1 – SoundMAX HD Audio I 1 – and change the setting to Not Connected as
shown below:

Page 6
Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration
9. Repeat Step 7 for the remaining audio input and both audio outputs.
10. Click OK and the Audio options dialog closes.
11. Section G is now completed.
Observation: If you have been observant, the Status bar area of the LiveProfessor screen has
changed – reflecting the addition of an audio source to the LiveProfessor configuration.

Section H: Plugin Management

You previously installed four plugins in Section C, Step 2, above. You will now make these
plugins available for use in LiveProfessor.
1. Go to Options.
2. Select Plugin manager.
Observation: The Plugin manager screen is displayed.

3. Select the Add directory button.

Observation: The Select Folder dialog is displayed.

Page 7
Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration

4. Navigate to the folder that was created in Section C, Step 1 above.

Remember: Path: C:\VST_Plugins
5. Select the above folder and then click Select.
Observation: LiveProfessor will perform a scan of all of the plugins located in the selected
folder location.
Manual: Adding new plugins, page 12, "LiveProfessor will test each of them to see if they work.
Since it has to fire up every plugin this might take some time. After the scanning is completed
you should have a list of plugins in the plugin manager and you are ready to go".

6. Close the Plugin manager screen by clicking the close button.

7. Close LiveProfessor.
8. Section H is now completed.
Lesson 2: LiveProfessor Configuration Files
LiveProfessor saves various configuration information at the time the application is exited.
As mentioned above, this configuration information is saved in a folder called LiveProfessor.
This folder is located in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data. Therefore,
this particular folder is a very important folder as it stores the ASIO patch information, the

Page 8

plugin information, the various folder and program settings and finally the keyboard shortcuts
that are used. You will be shown in a future tutorial how you can make a backup of this very
important folder.
