Tutorial 1
Tutorial 1
To get the most out of LiveProfessor, you will need to understand and become familiar with the
LiveProfessor window layout. If you are familiar with the Microsoft Windows environment, you
should also be familiar with most of the elements of LiveProfessor's screen layout. Just to be
absolutely sure, the key elements are listed in the following diagram:
Page 2
Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration
Here is a listing of the six major elements of the LiveProfessor window layout:
A. The Menu bar.
B. The Menu items.
C. The Status bars.
D. The Close, Minimize and Maximize buttons.
E; The Current Project name.
F. The Panels.
F: The LiveProfessor Workspace.
Observation: You will be referring to these elements often in these tutorials – so review any
that you might not be too familiar with.
As you will see in a subsequent tutorial, the upper right-hand corner of the screen [E] – will
contain the name of the current project. On first launch of LiveProfessor – this area of the
workspace will be blank.
However, when you create a new project or open an existing one – this area of the screen will
be populated with the name of the new or existing project.
Tip: This point is worth mentioning as LiveProfessor does not use many of the standard
Window’s conventions for screen handling. Therefore, this is the only area of the screen that
will display the name of a new, current or existing project. And personally, I prefer it this way.
Lesson 2: Launch and exit LiveProfessor (Observational Only)
To launch LiveProfessor, simply locate the desktop shortcut. Each and every time you exit – or
close LiveProfessor, a Confirm dialog will appear twice – first asking if you want to save the
Untitled Project or an existing project and second, asking if you want to exit the application.
Observation: This is a built-in safety feature of LiveProfessor to ensure that do indeed want to
exit the application. So, you will be asked to confirm these each and every time you exit
LiveProfessor.
Tip: From this point on, it will be understood that you know how to launch and exit the
LiveProfessor application and will be able to respond appropriately to the two Confirm dialogs
that are displayed when exiting the application.
Observation: There are two other folders created during the first launch of LiveProfessor:
a) The first folder is called LiveProfessor and is located in the My Documents folder.
§ This folder will hold, among other things, the Library files. More on this later.

Tutorial 1: Configuring LiveProfessor – Basic Configuration
b) The second folder is also called LiveProfessor and is located in C:\Documents and
Settings\[username]\Application Data.
§ This second folder is a very important folder as it stores all of the various configuration
settings that are made in LiveProfessor. I will show you how to make a backup of this folder
later.
Lesson 3: Saving a Project (Observational Only)
Saving a project in LiveProfessor is identical to the saving of any file using Microsoft Windows.
The use of the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+S) is common to all Windows’ environments and is a
much more efficient way of saving a project in LiveProfessor. The same principle is also
applicable to renaming a project through the use of Save as… option. Both of these functions
are available through the Project Menu option.
Keyboard: Save project – Ctrl+S.
Section E: First Launch of LiveProfessor
Here you will have the opportunity of launching LiveProfessor for the first time. You will also
learn about maximizing the screen.
1. Locate the shortcut on the desktop and launch LiveProfessor.
2. Close LiveProfessor.
3. Re-launch LiveProfessor.
4. Section E is now completed.
Section F: Screen Position
On the first launch of LiveProfessor, the screen area is not maximized. You will configure
LiveProfessor to open with the screen maximized.

2. Select Maximize to full screen.
Observation: The LiveProfessor screen will now be maximized.
3. Exit and re-open LiveProfessor.
Observation: The LiveProfessor will launch with the screen maximized.
4. Section F is now completed.
Section G: Audio Configuration
You will now configure the audio component of LiveProfessor. You will be using the integrated
audio card that comes with most PC-based systems and motherboards. If you are not using the
integrated audio device, you will have to make the necessary alterations to your particular
audio configuration.
Remember: As mentioned in the Introduction, any mention of the audio configuration will be in
reference to the integrated audio device.
1. Go to Options
2. Select Audio options.
Observation: The Audio settings dialog is displayed. Notice that the ASIO settings option has
already been pre-selected for you.

5. Leaving the Inputs as they are – de-select outputs 0 3 to 0 8 by left-clicking on each in turn
to disable them.
6. Observation: This is a slight pause – or delay – after the mouse button is clicked and before
that output is disabled.
7. Select the Default audio patch option.
Observation: This screen displays the default audio inputs and outputs.
8. Select 1 Input 1 – SoundMAX HD Audio I 1 – and change the setting to Not Connected as

11. Section G is now completed.
Observation: If you have been observant, the Status bar area of the LiveProfessor screen has
changed – reflecting the addition of an audio source to the LiveProfessor configuration.

plugin information, the various folder and program settings and finally the keyboard shortcuts
that are used. You will be shown in a future tutorial how you can make a backup of this very
important folder.

Closing Comments
In a future tutorial, you will learn much about the more advance configuration procedures of
LiveProfessor. For now, the above should suffice and give you the basic understanding of how
to configure LiveProfessor – in particular – how it will be used in the upcoming tutorials. This
will be especially true for the next tutorial, entitled “Creating your first Project”.
