Managing Video File Size with Handbrake

You can download the compression software known as “Handbrake” here: http://handbrake.fr/old.php

Make sure to download version 0.9.5. This version will allow you to specify a target video file size unlike more recent versions.

Once you have the software you will drag your video file onto the “Handbrake” icon-

The software will open and you will see this screen:
The red circled area is the known as the “Destination” or the location where you will save the file. In this instance, the file will be saved on
to the desktop. From this screen select the “Video” tab, circled in purple.
After selecting the “Video” tab, you will be directed to this screen. You will then enter a desired file size (must be under 100MB) next to “Target
Size (MB)”. Make sure to select MPEG-4 for the video codec. Click on the “Start” button (circled in purple). The file will be saved on your
desktop with the title listed on the “Destination” field (underlined in red).

The completed file will look like this:

Compressing Video for Tk20 Using Windows Movie Maker
1. Open Windows Live Movie Maker. (If you are not on a computer with Movie Maker installed, you can download
if for free from Microsoft.)

2. Click the Add videos and photos button, and

navigate to your video file, or drag and drop your
file into Movie Maker. If you need to combine
more than one video, add them in the order they
need to be in.

3. When your video is finished loading, go to the file menu

and click on Save Movie. A submenu will open with
several options for saving; pick Create Custom Setting.

4. A new window will open. Begin by choosing For email

in the drop down menu next to Setting. The standard
settings for email will be shown. If the estimated file
size is adequate (length of video x MB per minute of
video = <100MB), Close the dialog box and skip to
Step 7, otherwise continue with the next step.
5. Reduce the file size by lowering the Bit rate by 1000 kbps
until you’ve reached the appropriate size (length of video x
MB per minute of video = <100MB).

6. Now that you have the right settings, you want to enter a
new name (TLP Compress, e.g.) into the space next to Name.
This will help you to easily identify the Custom Settings when
you go to save your movie. *Then, change the Setting from
For email to <New>. This will automatically bring up the
option to save the custom setting. Select Yes, Save the new
setting and then Close the Create Custom Setting window.
*Do not change to <New> until after you rename the
setting.

7. Back on the Main Menu, hover over Save movie

until the submenu appears. Scroll down to the Custom
Setting name you chose (or select For email under
Common Settings if you’re coming from Step 5) and
select it.
8. The Save Movie window will appear.
Name the movie and save it to your
desktop or another folder.

A window will appear indicating the movie is saving.

When saving is complete, another window will

appear giving you options to Play the movie or
Open the folder you saved it in. If you open the
folder, you will be able to verify the size of your
video.

You may Close this dialog box as well. Then follow

instructions to upload your video to Tk20.
