1. The particulars of an uncompensated symmetrical line are V=132kV, δ =30o and X=100Ω. Find
the line current, midpoint voltage, real and reactive power through the line.

a) It’s desired to hold both the terminal voltages at 132kV. Find the rating of compensator necessary
for it. (System compensation)
b) Also, find the rating of compensator to improve the load power factor to unity. (Load
compensation)
c) Find the line losses.
The phase angle between sending and receiving end voltage is 42o.

b) A midpoint SVC is connected to make VM=1.05pu, calculate the power transmitted through
the line and VAR required to be supplied by the SVC. (Neglect ‘C’)
c) Considering the resistance of the line, calculate the total power loss in the line.
d) Assume the shunt capacitance is lumped at midpoint of the line; calculate the sending end
current when the receiving end is open without load.
5. Consider the given system consisting of a single machine connected to infinite bus (SMIB). The
Infinite bus has a voltage of 0.995<0o pu. Line reactance and machine sub transient reactance are
0.3 and 0.65pu respectively. Sending end complex power = 0.9pu MW + j 0.3pu MVAR.

6. A 300km long line,132kV,50Hz symmetrical transmission line has inductance of 1mH/km /phase
and phase angle between sending and receiving end as 30o
a) Calculate the active and reactive power through the line.
b) A midpoint SVC is used to regulate the midpoint voltage equal to 132kV. Calculate the
power transmitted by the line and amount of VAR to be delivered by the compensator.
c) A series compensator is to be used to achieve the power transmitted equal to that in part b).
Calculate the amount of capacitance to be connected in series. What is the VAR handled by
the series capacitor?
d) A phase shifter is to be used with the transmission line at the sending end to achieve the
power transmitted in part b). Calculate the magnitude and phase angle of the phase shifter
voltage w.r.t sending end.
7. A 250km long, 132kV, 50Hz transmission line has line inductance of 1.2mH/km/Phase has a
phase angle of 25o between sending and receiving end. Calculate the value of series capacitor to
be added in the line so that the active power flow through the line increases by 20%.
9. Given a symmetrical line with VS =132<30o kV and VR = 132<0o kV, line inductance is 300mH
per phase. Calculate:
a) Magnitude of midpoint voltage.
b) Magnitude of line current and its phase w.r.t phase of VR.
c) If a shunt compensator is connected at receiving end which draws a current of 100A<90o
w.r.t VR ,Calculate the new value of midpoint voltage.
10. A 300km long,132kV,50Hz symmetrical transmission line has following parameters as follows:
Resistance of the line: 0.001Ω/km per phase
Capacitance of the line: 0.01µF/km per phase. The phase angle between sending and receiving
end voltage is 30o.
Calculate:
a) Neglecting the resistance of the line, calculate active and reactive power flow through the line
b) A midpoint SVC is connected to make VM=1.05pu, calculate the power transmitted through the
line and VAR required to be supplied by the SVC.
c) Assume the shunt capacitance is lumped at midpoint of the line; calculate the sending end current
when the receiving end is open without load.

11. Given a lossless symmetrical line with VS =132<30o kV and VR = 132<0o kV, line inductance is
300mH.Calculate:
a) Real and reactive power through the line.
b) It’s desired to reduce power flow by 20% using Phase angle regulator. Calculate the magnitude of
injected voltage and phase angle required for it. Also, calculate the VA rating of the PAR.
