Assignment On Nano
Materials that have chemical substances in it or physical dimensions that are in the nanoscale are
known as Nanomaterials. Technology that deals with nanoscale dimension material or
nanomaterials, in short, is Nanotechnology. In a nanoscale 1 nanometer (nm) = 10-9meter (m),
which can also be said that 1nm is 1 millionth of a millimetre or 1nm is 1 billionth of a meter. 1
nm is of dimension is a hundred thousand times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.
Nanomaterials are most of the time very difficult to see even with Conventional Microscopes.
Electronic Microscope can be used to see nanomaterials, but to work on nanoscale Scanning
Tunneling Microscope is needed. This microscope allows us to see individual atoms and
molecules. Scanning Tunneling Microscope also allows us to move the atoms or molecules and
work with them.
When nanomaterials are compared to the large scale size, nanomaterials often have better
properties such as increased strength, high chemical reactivity and better conductivity; these
make them more useful compared to the large scale size.
Although nanomaterials are very small in size, they have a larger surface area. This is because
when a large object is broken into smaller pieces, the overall surface area increases. The higher
the surface area, the greater the contact with the surrounding. As a result, there are more and
faster surface level reactions. This property of nanomaterial makes them great catalysts.
Catalysts are substances that increase the rate of the chemical reaction. Hence nanomaterials are
widely used in industrial purposes as catalysts in chemical reactions.
The microscopic size of nanomaterials makes them more attracted to water and oil molecules,
which makes them more absorbent than larger molecules. As a result, certain nanomaterials are
used in the water treatment process to kill pollutants and also at sea to remove oil droplets.
Some solid nanomaterials can also act as a liquid. The outermost layer of nanomaterial is very
thin, it had only one or two atoms, causing the outer layer to behave like a liquid even though
their inside is solid. This structural formation causes these solid nanomaterials to act like liquid
and results in having a motion like an individual particle. Due to these movements the formation
of stable shapes using nanomaterial could fail sometimes, this might even cause loose
connection, if used in an electrical circuit.
There are some other properties as well which changes in nanoscale compared to large scale like
melting point and emission of visible light (i.e. it's colour). For example a nano scale of gold will
not have its gold colour, instead, it might have a pink or purple colour. It is assumed that using
this property better imaging and detection of things like tumours can be done.
