This document summarizes a student's seminar presentation on Mobile IP. It provides an abstract, overview, key terms, objectives, applications and advantages/disadvantages of Mobile IP. The abstract explains that Mobile IP allows mobile users to remain reachable while changing points of network attachment. The overview discusses how IP routing is based on stationary addresses and how Mobile IP allows devices to keep the same IP address while roaming. The objectives and applications sections provide examples of how Mobile IP supports seamless connectivity across different networks.

ABSTRACT
• while Internet technologies largely succeed in overcoming the
barriers of time and distance, existing Internet technologies
have yet to fully accommodate the increasing mobile computer
usage. A promising technology used to eliminate this current
barrier is Mobile IP.
• The emerging 3G mobile networks are set to make a huge
difference to the international business community. 3G
networks will provide sufficient bandwidth to run most of the
business computer applications while still providing a
reasonable user experience.
ABSTRACT
• However, 3G networks are not based on only one standard, but
a set of radio technology standards such as cdma2000, EDGE
and WCDMA. It is easy to foresee that the mobile user from
time to time also would like to connect to fixed broadband
networks, wireless LANs and, mixtures of new technologies
such as Bluetooth associated to e.g. cable TV and DSL access
points.
• In this light, a common macro mobility management
framework is required in order to allow mobile users to roam
between different access networks with little or no manual
intervention. (Micro mobility issues such as radio specific
mobility enhancements are supposed to be handled within the
specific radio technology.) IETF has created the Mobile IP
standard for this purpose.
OVER VIEW
• In IP networks, routing is based on stationary IP address,
similar to how a postal letter is delivered to fixed address on
envelop .A device on a network is reachable through a normal
IP routing by the IP address it is assigned on the network.

• Mobile IP is an open standard, is defined by International

engineering task force (IETF),RFC2002,that allows users to
keep the same IP address, stay connected, and maintain on
going applications while roaming between IP networks.
Mobile IP is a stable for the internet because it is based on
IP any media that can support IP can support Mobile IP.
KEY TERMS
• Bandwidth:
The total width of the frequency band available to or used by a
communications channel. Usually measured in Hertz (Hz).The
bandwidth of a channel limits the available channel capacity.
.Topology (Network Topology):
The interconnection structure of a network: which nodes are
directly connected to each other, and through which links they
are connected. Some simple topologies have been given
names, such as for instance 'bus topology', 'mesh topology',
'ring topology', 'star topology' and 'tree topology'.
KEY TERMS

• Signal strength :
The detectable power of the signal carrying the data bits, as
seen by the receiver of the signal.

Channel capacity:
The total capacity of a link to carry information (typically bits)
per unit time. With a given bandwidth, the theoretical
maximum channel capacity is given by Shannon's Law.
The actual channel capacity of a channel is determined by
the channel bandwidth, the coding system used, and the
signal to noise ratio.
KEY TERMS
• Care-of-Address (CoA) :
A packet addressed to the mobile node which arrives at the
mobile node's home network when the mobile node is away
from home and has registered a Care-of Address will
beforwarded to that address by the Home Agent in the home
network.
• Mobile Host :
A mobile node that is an end host and not a router. A
Mobile Host is capable of sending and receiving packets, that
is, being asource or destination of traffic, but not a forwarder
of it.
OBJECTIVE

APPLICATIONS OF MOBILE IP
• In many applications (e.g., VPN, VoIP), sudden changes
in network connectivity and IP address can cause
problems. Mobile IP was designed to support seamless
and continuous Internet connectivity.
• Mobile IP is most often found in wired and wireless
environments where users need to carry their mobile
devices across multiple LAN subnets. Examples of use
are in roaming between overlapping wireless systems,
e.g., IP over DVB, WLAN, WiMAX and BWA.
• Mobile IP is not required within cellular systems such as
3G, to provide transparency when Internet users migrate
between cellular towers, since these systems provide
their own data link layer handover and roaming
mechanisms.
ADVANTAGES OF MOBILE IP
• Uniqueness:

• SpottyInternetAvailability:
Spotty Internet availability is still something that plagues
mobile users. A mobile IP requires a strong signal to
connect to the Internet.
• Portability
IP creation on the go is the only way that users can
access the Internet while away from a traditional
modem/router setup
DISADVANTAGES OF MOBILE IP

• An IP address is associated with fixed network

location.

• When we go for office ,university or work place and

we access the internet from a fixed IP address. This IP
address may be for a desktop computer or a laptop.

• In IP , if we take computer to a different place outside

our usual network we have to reconfigure it with new
IP.
CONCLUSION
• Mobile IP which has a slow growth compared to the Wireless
LAN seems to be a failure technology but Mobile IP has great
potential. The increased user convenience and the reduced
need for application awareness of mobility can be a major
driving force for its adoption. It has been shown in this paper
that even with the limitations that are present in the
implementation of Mobile IP, there will be a higher need for
Mobile IP in the future. Security needs are getting active
attention and will benefit from the deployment efforts
underway.
• There are works that are going on in this field to overcome the
limitations that are currently present in Mobile IP. This paper
has also discussed few of the challenges that are faced by the
Mobile IP and solutions have been proposed for a successful
deployment of Mobile IP in the future.
FUTURE SCOPE

• Mobile IP will play an increasingly important part in the

deployment of future Internet mobile networking, and current
events related to the specification and production of standard
billing procedures seem likely to accelerate the penetration of
Mobile IP into the marketplace
