SCHOOL OF DATA SCIENCE AND FORECASTING

M.B.A. (DS5A-507) & M.Sc. (DS5B-507) - Probability and Statistics

First Semester (2019-2021)
Assignment
Max. Marks: 20 Due: November 4, 2019

All questions are compulsory.

1. (2 Marks) Suppose a distribution of measurements X is normally distributed with a mean of 3.2

meters and a standard deviation of 0.65 meters. Let Y be the distribution of measurements in
centimeters. Calculate 𝑌, 𝜇𝑦 , 𝜎𝑦2 , 𝜎𝑦 ?

2. (4 Marks) The data below gives the lengths (in cm) of 43 male coyotes found in Nova Scotia. For
this sample, x = 92.06 and s = 6.70. This data has a bell-shaped distribution. See how well the
empirical rule describes the actual distribution of this data by finding the percentage of sample
values within one, two, and three standard deviations of the mean.

3. (2 Marks) Let X be a normal random variable with mean 6.5 and standard deviation 0.8.
Consider the random variable 𝑌 = 𝑒 𝑥 . What is the probability 𝑃(800 < 𝑌 < 1000)?

4. (4 Marks) On the average, a certain computer part lasts ten years. The length of time the
computer part lasts is exponentially distributed.
(a) On the average, how long would five computer parts last if they are used one after
another?
(b) What is the probability that a computer part lasts between nine and 11 years?

5. (5 Marks) A student takes a quiz in his statistical class. The quiz consists of 10 questions, the first
4 are True-False, the last 6 are multiple choice questions with 4 possible answers each, only one
of which is correct. Student did not study for the quiz, so he/she guesses independently on each
question. Find the probability that he/she answers exactly 2 questions correctly.

6. (3 Marks) Poor Mike is hopelessly in love with Lisa. Unfortunately for Mike, Lisa does not feel
the same way. However, Mike remains hopeful, since on any given day independently there is a
5% chance that Lisa smiles at him. (Assume a month has 30 days for this problem.) What is the
probability that Mike goes half of the month without a smile from Lisa?
