Course Title: Ph.D: Advanced Philosophical Foundation of Education

Term: 1st Semester 2019-2020
Professor: Dr. Milagros O. Luang
Name:NENA G. ABASOLO

PARTIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SUBJECT

OUTPUT #1

Teacher –centered education/ curriculum is considered a traditional education. The teacher or

someone in higher position determiner/ decides the curriculum, teaches directly through lecture or
reading of texts and students are expected to absorb passively. This educational philosophy can be
stereotyped and boring, irrelevant and may not be interesting to the students.

 Question: How can teacher and school administrators create a better learning environment for
their students?
 Activity: A Debate: The Progressive School VS The Traditional School

Answer output 1

A teacher can create a better learning environment for their students by making class activities
which can develop the student’s creative thinking, discover the answer to the learning task and
not just spoon feeding them. The same through with the school administrators they must
provide school program, environment and facilities to facilitate creative interaction which will
result to creative or progressive learning.

OUTPUT #2Design your own school and formulate its philosophical foundation

There are different philosophical foundations of education.

As you watch the video clips, observe closely how the students designed their own
school and the philosophical foundations integrated. Compare the similarities and differences you see
with your school experience concerning the curriculum lessons/ topics/ subjects and the roles that
students and teachers play in teaching-learning-process, assessment of learning and so on.

 Question: What are the strengths and weaknesses observed?

 Activity: Watch the video clip
Answer:Output 2: Design your own school and formulate the philosophical foundations of
education that you will need / use.

The strength of the program is that the students are free to explore the answer for their tasks,
free to develop their own skills and they enjoy the program. The weakness is its time
consuming you need a lot of time to find the answer to their assigned task and since its not
guided by a teacher the tendency of the students is to go beyond the task.

 It is based on the philosophy that life is a gift, make it to the fullest.

Output: The school which I’m going to design is based on moral regeneration. It’s a
combination of self directed and teacher guided curriculum. The students are facilitated by the
teacher who will assign the task and the students are free to find the answer to the assign task
and yet moral value should be integrated or associated on the findings of their answers and
should be emphasize during their presentation which will be again facilitated by the teacher

OUTPUT#3 Educational Philosophies

Here are capsulized descriptions of educational philosophies that are traditional and
progressive. Then watch the video presentation.

Teacher-centered philosophies

1. Essentialism: Teachers teach typically through lecture or book work — the “essence” of important
knowledge inherent in the core academic disciplines (e.g., math, science, history, English).

2. Perennialism: Teachers should make students gain knowledge of the “perennial” knowledge
passed down from the great works and books of different authorities.

Student-centered philosophies

3. Progressivism: Teachers collaborate with students to construct knowledge on the topics that
concern both the students and society. Students work in groups and are often encouraged to help
determine curriculum and “learn by doing.”

4. Social Reconstructionism: Teachers help students construct knowledge by studying social

issues and then discuss those issues in just ways.

5. Existentialism: Students learn whatever subjects they choose at their own pace and teachers
should be around to support them.

For better understanding and learning consider and answer the following questions:

1. Why is schooling important?

2. What is curriculum and who makes the decision what curriculum should be used?
3. What are the different means of learning?
4. How is assessment of learning done?
5. Name the leading proponents of educational philosophy and describe their advocacies.

Answer output 4

1. Why is schooling important?

Schooling is important because it is through formaleducation that one canobtain title like
diplomas which is a proof that you have undergone such degree or course. Not just like
knowledge gained through personal way, it cannot give you title.
2. Why it curriculum and who makes decision what curriculum should be used?
Curriculum is the content of the lessons taught inacourse or program.the one making the
decision as to what curriculum should beused is the government through the people assign
to formulate the program.
3. What are the different means of learning?
Learning can be obtain by observation by observing you cannot only see thing but perceive
it. Learning also can be gained by personal experience. There is a saying that can be
gained by personal experience . there is a saying that goes’;experience is the best teacher”
And by the people who are knowledgeable in certain area.
4. How is assessment of learning done.

Assessment of learning usually is being done by testing whether written or oral testing. But
the best tools to assess learning is by application in the real life situation.

5. The learning proponents of educational philosophy

a. Robert maynard Hutchins-Perenialism-the focus is to teach ideas that are everlasting to
seekenduring truths which are construct, not changing.
b. William Bagley- proponents of essentialism- the core of the curriculum focus on facts
the basic training is to read, write speak and compute.
c. John Dewey-proponent of progressivism- educatin should focus on the whole
child.students is a problems solver base onpersonal experience.
