Due to the continuous growth of vehicle ownership, City is facing the problem
of parking spaces. The major problem of parking in the Nagpur is in the city’s
CBDs (Central Business Districts) like SitaBuldi, Dharampeth, Shankar Nagar
etc.

STUDY AREA
Shankar Nagar
Our study area is SHANKAR NAGAR which is one of the major CBDs (Central
Business Districts) of Nagpur and helds many Business complexes, Hotels,
Shops, Coaching institutes etc. People come here for shopping and for pleasure
walking on the footpaths along the streets of Shankar Nagar area.
Shankar Nagar area has shop density of 10 shops per 100 metres.
Opening of new coaching institutes near TIMES Square has added to the traffic
woes. Not only private vehicles even vans engaged in escorting students have
started parking on this busy patch.
Four wheelers are parked in areas marked for parking two wheelers and even
two-wheelers parked in no parking zone and also on footpaths.
Due to uncontrolled and unplanned Parking Supply people are parking the
vehicles on the roads and footpaths.

PARKING RELATED ISSUES
F IGURE 2 : U NPLANNED AND ON -ROAD PARKING ENGULFS THE SPACE FOR PEDESTRIANS.
4
FIGURE 3: TWO LANE ROAD IS EFFECTIVELY USED AS SINGLE LANE BY THE ONGOING
TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF THE ON-ROAD PARKING .
Due to the on-street parking and the parking on footpaths the whole area is not
pedestrian friendly.
Providing a safe and sufficient Parking supply for the required demand.
As the Shankar Nagar Area does not have any space for off street parking,
we have to provide a Safe Satellite Parking Space.
5
What is Satellite Parking ?
It is the parking space created some distance away from the main destination
of the vehicles coming in that area due to the insufficient parking space in the
main destination area.
People who are wishing to come in the main destination area by their own
vehicle will first go to the Pseudo Destination which is the Satellite Parking
Space provided some distance away.
And a proper connectivity between the parking space and main destination is
provided by a simpler route through public transports like E-rikshaw.
Thus, the encroachment of vehicles on the roads is reduced and the sufficient
parking supply is created.

OBJECTIVES
1) Data Collection
We conducted the parking survey on the three major streets where the On-
Road parking problem is severe and the parking demand is high.
We recorded the parking accumulation of vehicles on both sides of roads in the
peak hours of day.
The survey is conducted in the peak hours of the day i.e. 6pm to 7pm to
recognize the maximum extent of parking demand.
The data obtained is as follows:
STREET A (1.2km) : 60 two wheelers and 10 four wheelers per 100 metre.
STREET B (150m) : 90 two wheelers and 8 four wheelers per 100 metre.
STRRET C (500m) : 130 two wheelers and 20 four wheelers per 100 metre.
7
2) Data Analysis
From the parking demand survey conducted on the main streets of Shankar
Nagar Area we calculated the total parking supply required.
From the Parking demand survey, we calculated the space requirement for
the alternate parking area we are planning to provide and that is equal to
approx. 7500 square metres.
8
This drain flows across the Shankar Nagar area and it is 900m in length and
of Avg. 10m in width.
The drain has almost 8000 square metres of area on which we can provide
the parking space.
The government is also planning to make a good use of area covered by these
drains by introducing a project for beautification and rejuvenation of Nag
River- a signature river of city.
9
We can provide concrete slabs on the drain with proper ventilation so that the
space on the drains can be used as parking area. Also, there will be no
accumulation of gasses in the covered drain due to the ventilation provided by
placement of steel grits on the slab in some intervals.
As the drain has a road alongside it, the parked vehicles will have a larger
manoeuvring area and hence the movement of all the vehicles parked will be
smooth.

4) Providing Connectivity between Parking and Destination
Parking facilities provided will be some distance away from the main
destination of people. This distance may be about 1-2 km from the parking
space. So, we have to provide the connectivity between the parking space and
main destinations.
One of such connectivity facilities which can be provided is E-rikshaw. It will
accommodate 4-6 people at once. This will act as a connectivity between
parking area and destinations. This rickshaw will pick up passengers from
parking lots and drop to destination and vice-versa.
This e-rickshaws will be driven along Shankar Nagar road from Laxmi Bhavan
square to Law college square.
11
to be driven back to respective parking lot and the driver can pick the
passengers accordingly and drive back the passengers to parking area.
