Assignment of Satellite Communication

Satellite communication involves transmitting signals between earth stations via satellites. The basic components are earth stations that transmit and receive radio frequency signals, satellites that receive, amplify and retransmit signals, and various satellite systems like ground-to-ground. There are active satellites that transmit and process signals and passive satellites that simply relay signals. Major applications of satellite communication include GPS, weather forecasting, satellite TV, and space exploration.

Write an Overview of Satellite Communication

Introduction: In 1962, the American telecommunications giant AT&T launched the world's first
true communications satellite, called Telstar. Since then, countless communications satellites
have been placed into earth orbit, and the technology being applied to them is forever growing in
sophistication.

Satellite: It is defined as heavy objects which revolves around another objects in space due to the
effect of mutual gravitational forces

Satellite communication: Satellite communication is a process in which transmission of signals

takes place from one earth station to another earth station with the help of a satellite.

Basic satellite system

1. Earth station / Ground station: Earth station plays an important role in satellite
communication for transmission and receiving of the RF signals (radio frequency signal).
Earth station consists of antenna and control unit transmission of any information is taken
place using earth station.
2. Satellite: Satellite acts as trans-receiver which receive the RF signal amplifies and
retransmits it back.

Types of satellite -

1. Active satellite- Active satellites are those satellites which are used linking transmitting
and processing of signals.
2. Passive satellite- Passive satellites are those satellite which are only used for linking of
two stations through space in this process the loss of power is more.

Satellite systems -

1 Ground to ground: In ground to ground satellite system the earth station ‘A' sends a signal to
the satellite which after processing retransmits to another earth station ‘B'

2 Ground to cross- link ground: In ground to cross-link they are not in line of sight of a common
satellite.

3 Ground to relay platform system: The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) is a
network of American communications satellites (each called a tracking and data relay satellite, TDRS)
and ground stations used by NASA for space communications.

Application of Satellite Communications

1. Global Positional System: GPS is the biggest example. All our navigation systems,
Google Maps etc are a result of a system of satellites up there that track your car/phone
anywhere in the world.
2. Weather forecasting: Satellites have the biggest contribution to making predictions
about weather changes by studying the global scenario and assessing changes of the past.
It wouldn't have been possible without satellites.
3. Satellite TV: All of us enjoy HD channels on our couches, surfing through channels
every 30 seconds. All this variety and quality was made possible due to satellite TV. The
dishes on our rooftops are getting the signals from a satellite above us, which in turn get
signals from the main network provider.
4. Space Exploration: Definitely cannot forget this major application. This is from where
the other applications originated. Kepler space telescope has found out thousands of
distant habitable planets. All that remains is to find a way to reach there.
