HEAT TRANSFER ASSIGNMENT 2 (UNIT 4 to 6)

UNIT 4:

1.a) Explain the concept of hydro-dynamic and thermal boundary layers on a vertical plate in
natural convection
b) Calculate the average coefficient of heat transfer, heat transfer rate for natural convection
for a vertical plate of 30 cm high at 500C. The surrounding air is at 240C. Also calculate the
boundary layer thickness at the trailing edge of the plate.

2. a)Explain with neat sketch thermal , hydrodynamic entry length and boundary layer in
internal flows. Assume that flow is Steady and laminar.
b)Air at 20℃ flows through a tube 8cm diameter with a velocity of 9m/sec (Fully developed
flow) . Determine the tube length required for exit air temperature of 36℃. If
i) The tube wall is maintained at 80℃
ii) If a constant heat flux of 1800 W is supplied through wall

UNIT 5:

Boiling and Condensation:

3. Draw pool boiling curve? Explain the significance of critical heat flux?
b) A copper pan of 35 cm diameter contains water and its bottom surface is maintained at
1150C by an electric heater. Calculate the power required to boil water in this pan and the
rate at which water evaporates from the pan due to boiling process. Also make calculations
for the heat flux for these conditions.

4. a)Distinguish shortly i) sub cooled boiling and saturated boiling ii) Nucleate boiling and
film boiling iii) Dropwise condensation and film wise condensation
b) A square array of four hundred tubes, 1.5 cm outer diameter is used to condense steam at
atmospheric pressure. The tube walls are maintained at 88°C by a coolant flowing inside the
tubes. Calculate the amount of steam condensed per hour per unit length of the tubes

Heat Exchangers:

5. a) Find the heat transfer rate if 1000 kg/h of water at 50 oC enters parallel flow heat
exchanger and leaves at 40 oC. The heat is transferred to cooling water (5000 Kg/h) entering
at 35 oC and leaving at 40 oC. Calculate the area of heat exchanger if the overall heat transfer
coefficient is 1000 W/m2K. Take Cp of both hot and cold water to be 4174 J/kg-K.

b) In the above problem if the exit temperature of both hot and cold water are not known,
and area remains same. Then calculate the exit temperatures using NTU method.

6. a) Define fouling and classify heat exchangers. Derive the expression for LMTD in case of
a counter flow double pipe heat exchanger.

b) Derive an expression for effectiveness of a parallel flow heat exchanger using NTU
method?
UNIT 6:

7. Explain the terms i) Emissive power ii) Irradiation iii) Black body iv) Grey and diffuse
surface v)Shape/view factor vi)Wien’s relation
b) Two black square plates of size 1.0 m by 1.0 m are placed parallel to each other at
distance of 0.4 m. One plate is maintained at a temperature of 9000C and the other at 4000C.
Find the net exchange of energy due to radiation between two plates.

8. a) Write brief notes on radiation shields and resistance analogy.

b) Find out the heat transfer rate due to radiation between two infinitely parallel planes.
One plane has emissivity of 0.5 and is maintained at 3000c and another plane has emissivity
of 0.3 and is maintained at 300c. If radiation shield of emissivity 0.2 is introduced between
the two planes. Find the percentage heat transfer reduction with shield.
