LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 3

Prepared by: Mr. Rafael Antonio U. Esquillo

Intended Grade Level: Grade 3 (Ages 8-9)

I. OBJECTIVES
a. Subtract whole numbers from 100, 1,000 and 10,000 using the formula “all from 9
and last from 10”.
b. Apply the formula in subtracting money mentally.

II. CONTENT
Topic:
Subtracting whole numbers from 100, 1,000 and 10,000 mentally using “all from 9 and
last from 10”
Pre-requisites:
Subtracting whole numbers without and with regrouping (conventional method)

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

a. Online References: school.math-inic.com
vedicmaths4alll.com

IV. PROCEDURES

1) Recall prerequisite topics (5 min)

a) Recall with students how to subtract 3-4 digit from 4-digit numbers from right to left
i) Ask one student to subtract 4983 – 2818 on the board, then check if the answer is
correct.
ii) Ask one student to subtract 1000 – 853 on the board, then check if the answer is
correct.

2) Motivation (5 min)
a) Tell to the students the following scenario:
“Suppose that you are in a mall with your family. Then, mom and dad gave you a 1000-
peso bill to buy anything. Say for example you want a food that costs PhP 231. Now you are at
the counter and about to pay the food. You want to check if the change you received is correct
but you have no calculator and anything to write on to compute for it. How will you check for
the change mentally?”

3) Discuss the objectives (5 min)

a) Ask the students to read the following objectives to be projected on the board
At the end of the class:
1. I can subtract whole numbers mentally.
2. I can apply mental subtraction in money calculations.

4) Discuss how to subtract 3- or 4-digit number (non-zero last digit) from 1000 or 10000
respectively and assess them formatively. (10 min)

To subtract 3-digit number last digit from 1000 (e.g. 1000)

1. Subtract each digit except the last digit from 9 (All from 9)
2. Subtract the non-zero last digit from 10 (Last from 10)
3. The digits in order will be the difference

Example 1.1
1,000 – 231
Step 1: “All from 9”
Subtract 2 from 9. 9-2 = 7.
Subtract 3 from 9. 9-3 = 6.
Step 2: “Last from 10”
Subtract the last digit 1 from 10. 10-1 = 9.
Step 3: Thus, 1000 – 231 = 769.
Check with students if the difference obtained is correct by adding it to the subtrahend.

Example 1.2
1,000 – 458
Step 1: “All from 9”
Subtract 4 from 9. 9-4 = 5.
Subtract 5 from 9. 9-5 = 4.
Step 2: “Last from 10”
Subtract the last digit 8 from 10. 10-8 = 2.
Step 3: Thus, 1000 – 458 = 542.
Check with students if the difference obtained is correct by adding it to the subtrahend.

Example 1.3
10,000 – 6,019
Step 1: “All from 9”
Subtract 6 from 9. 9-6 = 3.
Subtract 0 from 9. 9-0 = 9.
Subtract 1 from 9. 9-1 = 8.
Step 2: “Last from 10”
Subtract the last digit 9 from 10. 10-9 = 1.
Step 3: Thus, 1000 – 6019 = 3981.
Check with students if the difference obtained is correct by adding it to the subtrahend.

Formative Assessment 1:
1) 1,000 – 813 2) 1,000 – 783
3) 1,000 – 247 4) 10,000 – 1,898

5) Discuss how to subtract 3- or 4-digit number (zero last digit) from 1000 or 10000
respectively and assess them formatively. (10 min)

Example 2.1
1,000 – 250
Step 1: “All from 9”
Subtract 2 from 9. 9-2 = 7.
Step 2: “Last from 10” (Last nonzero digit)
Subtract the last nonzero digit 5 from 10. 10-5 = 5.
Step 3: Thus, 1000 – 619 = 250.
Check with students if the difference obtained is correct by adding it to the subtrahend.

Example 2.2
10,000 – 7,340
Step 1: “All from 9”
Subtract 7 from 9. 9-7 = 2.
Subtract 3 from 9. 9-3 = 6.
Step 2: “Last from 10” (Last nonzero digit)
Subtract the last nonzero digit 4 from 10. 10-4 = 6.
Step 3: Thus, 1000 – 7340 = 2660.
Check with students if the difference obtained is correct by adding it to the subtrahend.

Formative Assessment 2:
1) 1,000 – 730 3) 10,000 – 7,520
2) 1,000 – 890 4) 10,000 – 2,800

6) Discuss how to subtract a) 1000 – 2-digit number and b) 10000 – 3-digit number. (10
min)

Example 3.1
1,000 – 23
Step 1: “Attach zero”
23 -> 023
Step 2: “All from 9”
Subtract 0 from 9, 9-0 = 9
Subtract 2 from 9, 9-2 = 7
Step 3: “Last from 10”
Subtract 3 from 10, 10-3 = 7
Step 4: Thus, 1,000 – 23 = 977
Check with students if the difference obtained is correct by adding it to the subtrahend.
Example 3.2
10,000 – 47
Step 1: “Attach zero”
47 -> 0,047
Step 2: “All from 9”
Subtract 0 from 9, 9-0 = 9
Subtract 0 from 9, 9-0 = 9
Subtract 4 from 9, 9-4 = 5
Step 3: “Last from 10”
Subtract 7 from 10, 10-7 = 3
Step 4: Thus, 1,000 – 47= 9,953
Check with students if the difference obtained is correct by adding it to the subtrahend.

Formative Assessment:
1) 1,000 – 35 4) 10,000 – 358
2) 1,000 – 46 5) 10,000 – 250
3) 1,000 – 90 6) 10,000 – 28

7) Give seatwork and performance task. (15 min)

Seatwork
Solve the following
1.) PhP 1,000 – PhP 289 6.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 2,900
2.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 1,791 7.) PhP 1,000 – PhP 28
3.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 8,455 8.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 98
4.) PhP 1,000 – PhP 380 9.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 894
5.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 1,570 10.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 40

Answers:
1.) PhP 1,000 – PhP 289 = PhP 711 6.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 2,900 = PhP 7,100
2.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 1,791 = PhP 8,209 7.) PhP 1,000 – PhP 28 = PhP 972
3.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 8,455 = PhP 1,545 8.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 98 = PhP 9,902
4.) PhP 1,000 – PhP 380 = PhP 620 9.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 894 = PhP 9 106
5.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 1,570 = PhP 8,430 10.) PhP 10,000 – PhP 40 = PhP 9,960

Performance Task: “Play with Money”

1. Ask all students to bring out their assignments: (1) set of play money (2) 5 pictures of
sari-sari store items, each with corresponding price less than 190, and (3) 1 pad paper.
2. This game will be played by pair with two different characters – one student will be
the seller and the other will be the customer.
3. For the first 2 minutes, the pairs will act like in a sari-sari store. For each pair, the
customer will buy 3 items from the seller. The customer will tell the seller the items
that will be bought. The seller needs to mentally add the 3 items and give the change
without solving it in scratch paper or calculator.
4. For the next 2 minutes, roles will interchange in every pair. The new customer will
buy 3 items from the seller and the seller needs to determine the change mentally.
