Elements of Teaching-Learning Process

The document discusses the elements of teaching and learning in today's classrooms. It identifies the key roles as the teacher, learner, and learning environment. Teachers are now seen as facilitators of learning rather than just transmitters of knowledge. Learners are more active participants in the learning process and take on more responsibility. The ideal learning environment is learner-centered and provides students opportunities to direct their own education. It also contrasts teacher-centered and learner-centered approaches, with the latter now seen as more effective.

#What’sExpectedOf You?

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

1. identify the characteristics and/or the roles of today’s teachers, learners, and learning
environment; and
2. reflect and discuss on the differences between teacher-centered and learner-centered
learning.

#WhatYouNeedToLearn?

In the previous lesson, you learned about the K-12 science curriculum framework. Now, you will
learn more about the elements of teaching and learning of today’s classroom.

Before that, let us see your thoughts about the characteristics and/or the roles of today’s
learners, teachers, and learning environment. Write your answers on the first or the “BEFORE
LEARNING” column.

#WhatHaveYouLearned?

Activity 1. Map of Conceptual Change

Answer the same question that you were asked to answer at the beginning of this lesson. This
time, write your answers on the last or the “AFTER LEARNING” column.

Activity 2. Think-Pair-Share Activity:

Task 1: Think and reflect on your Map of Conceptual Change.

Task 2: Pair with anybody from the class.

Task 3: Share with him/her your thoughts at the beginning of the lesson and what you
learned regarding the characteristics and the new roles of teachers and learners. Be ready to
discuss what you talked about with the whole class.

Your reflection: For students to understand where they are headed with their learning,
teachers should constantly share with them the "big picture" of learning, at the beginning of
each unit of work and throughout the progression of the learning. This enables students to
monitor their progress against defined benchmarks or progressions. If possible, progressions of
learning for particular areas of learning can be displayed in the classroom. . The more students
are involved in the process of identifying next steps, the greater their understanding will be of
how to extend their learning.

Activity 3. Give at least five things that you will do to achieve a learner-centered learning
environment.

1. Develops respectful relationship

2. Engage learners in hands on activity

3. Recognize that leaners are experts in their own lives

4. Involve sharing and comparing of experience from the class

5. Create safe environment for leaners in order for them to receive meaningful learning

Activity 4. Self-Assessment
Put a check if the following are met.

I found out the characteristics and/or roles of today’s teachers, learners, and

learning environment.
I reflected and discussed on differences between teacher-centered and learner-

centered learning.
