Analog Electronics Lab 6

This document summarizes an electronics lab experiment to design and analyze first order low pass and high pass filters. For the low pass filter, the group measured the output voltage and gain at various frequencies from 1 kHz to 6 kHz, verifying the expected 20dB/decade roll-off. For the high pass filter, they designed the filter for a 4 kHz lower cutoff frequency and 2V pass band gain, then measured output voltage and gain from 1 kHz to 6 kHz, matching the theoretical frequency response. The group concluded they successfully implemented and analyzed the characteristics of first order filters.

ACTIVE FILTER
Aim:
To design and obtain the frequency response of
 First order Low Pass Filter (LPF)
 First order High Pass Filter (HPF)

First order Low Pass Filter (LPF)

A LPF allows frequencies from 0 to higher cut of frequency, fH. At fH the gain is
0.707 Amax, and after fH gain decreases at a constant rate with an increase in frequency. The gain
decreases 20dB each time the frequency is increased by 10. Hence the rate at which the gain rolls
off after fH is 20dB/decade or 6 dB/ octave.

Table:
Frequency O/P Voltage Gain
Voltage(V) Gain indB
Vo/Vi
1kHz 10 2 6.02
2kHz 9 1.8 5.1
3kHz 8 1.6 4.08
4khz 7 1.4 2.9
5kHz 6 1.2 1.58
6kHz 5.50 1.1 0.82

First order High Pass Filter (HPF)

The frequency at which the magnitude of the gain is 0.707 times the maximum value of
gain is called low cut off frequency. Obviously, all frequencies higher than fL are pass band
frequencies with the highest frequency determined by the closed –loop band width all of the
op-amp.
First Order HPF: To design a High Pass Filter for lower cut off frequency fL = 4 KHz and pass
band gain of 2
fL = 1/( 2πRC )
Assuming C=0.01 μF,the value of R is found from
R= 1/(2πfLC) Ω =3.97KΩ
The pass band gain of HPF is given by AF = 1+ (RF/R1)= 2
Assuming R1=10 KΩ, the value of RF is found from
RF=( AF-1) R1=10KΩ

Vo/Vi
1Khz 2.50 0.5 -6.02
2khz 4.50 0.9 -0.9
3kHz 6 1.2 1.58
4kHz 7 1.4 2.92
5khz 7.75 1.55 3.80
6Khz 8.25 1.65 4.34

Conclusion:
The results that we obtained exactly matched the characteristics of the low pass and high pass first
order filter as explained in lectures and manual. We successfully implemented these filters and
observed the results. This increased our knowledge on subject and we understood the basic concept
of filters
