Analog Electronics Lab 9b

This document describes a 3-bit flash analog-to-digital converter (ADC) circuit using operational amplifiers as comparators. The circuit uses a potential divider network to set reference voltages for each op-amp comparator. The input voltage is applied to the non-inverting terminal of each op-amp and the outputs are fed to a priority encoder to generate the 3-bit digital code. The circuit was simulated in Proteus and verified to be functioning correctly by observing the digital output for different input voltages ranging from 0-12V.

3-bit Flash ADC using Op-Amp

Introduction
If an input analog signal is to be converted into digital signal, an ADC is used for that purpose. It
is based on operational amplifier used as comparator and a priority encoder is used at the outputs
of these op-amps. Reference voltage for all the op amps is set through a potential divider network
so that the 1st op-amp has the lowest reference voltage which increases as the number of op-amps
increase. Input voltage is applied to the non-inverting terminal of op-amp which means that if VIN
is greater than the VREF, output of the op-amp will be 1. Circuit diagram of 3-bit Flash ADC using
op-amp is shown below

Figure 1: 3bit ADC

As shown in the example in lecture, for 2.5V the digital output will be 00001111 and after priority
encoder it will be 011 which means only D2 and D3 will glow as shown in the figure

Figure 2: 3 bit Flash ADC at 2.5V

This proves that the 3 bit Flash ADC is working.

Also we were assigned to fill a table regarding the Voltage Range, Comparator State, and Digital
Result for input and reference voltage of 12V.
Table 1: Required Table of 3bit ADC

Voltage Range Comparator State Digital Output

1.34-2.66V 00000001 000
2.67V-3.99V 00000011 001
4V-5.33V 00000111 010
5.34V-6.66V 00001111 011
6.67V-7.99V 00011111 100
8V-9.33V 00111111 101
9.34V-10.66V 01111111 110
10.67V-12V 11111111 111

Conclusion
In this lab we learned about the analog to digital converter using op-amps as comparators. We also
learned about the priority encoder and its working. The circuit was simulated on proteus and it was
verified that the ADC is fully functioning.
