Reaction Paper in Administration of Nursing Service
From this topic, it well emphasized that management is a discipline. It is a complex and
regulated and bound by a certain set of principles. Management is no different, and has
principles that are unique to it. These principles play a key role in making the complicated
process and discipline of management clear and practical and helps in ensuring its efficiency.
Thus, in this topic, the importance of Principles of Management is highlighted as it is substantial
and it is important to have a detailed understanding of these principles.
I learned that these principles significantly deal with human behavior, thought and
actions which never stays still and thus are not as rigid as the principles that govern science or
other disciplines. Furthermore, these principles are guidelines that are used when applying the
techniques of management. From this topic I have learned the importance of management
principles and its impact for an organization. It was well pointed out in the report that proper
understanding of management principles is necessary and helpful for managers as these
principles act as guidelines for managerial activities. By practicing principles, managers can
avoid various mistakes while dealing with people in the organization. Roles and responsibilities
of a nurse manager were also discussed including an organization’s (hospital) aims and
objectives. This topic emphasized that as a future nurse leader and manager, I must understand
and dwell organizational structures, roles, and cultures with ease as nurse administrators
require strong management skills.
In conclusion, I have realized that leadership in nursing administration warrants
knowledge of the future - that is, a clear point of view and an ability to picture and describe
what nursing is and will be. This knowledge informs the establishment of a vision for nursing.
Vision is the starting point and end goal of leadership practice.
Nursing administration aspire to structure nursing work in a way that advocates nurses'
being present for patients and families. This is essential to enable nurses to develop a
relationship with those they serve. Within that relationship, they can bring their unique
knowledge while delivering clinical care.
Similarly, it is necessary to structure managers' span of control in a way that enables
them to develop a relationship with the nursing staff they support. Nurse managers and
administrators must be visible and build connections with nurses. This partnership is critical for
an understanding of the issues that are important to nurses. Strong Nursing Unit Management
helps to encourage nurses to work as units. To achieve teamwork, Nurses in management
positions should encourage staff members to collaborate and help each other willingly. In this
report, the following were also tackled: factors affecting the quality patient care, therapeutic
environment in nursing, staffing pattern, and standard safety measures – all these factors have
direct impact to patient care, hence, are essential parts of nursing unit management to be
addressed in order to ensure quality patient care. Indeed, as agreed in the class discussion, all
of these were developed and are contributory to create and support a healthy workplace.
Moreover, nurse unit managers deliver harmonious and clear messages about the reality of
practice and the practice setting, and about desired outcomes for nurses and the patients and
families they serve.
In conclusion, nursing unit design, nursing staff communication networks, and staffing
pattern and methods are all vital aspects of the nursing unit and should be addressed and
considered by an effective nurse manager as it does not only affect its staff but it has a direct
impact in the quality of patient care provided to the patients.
Personnel Management
Personnel management is something that many organizations focus on, while other
organizations tend to spread out personnel management responsibilities to various executives
and managers. Organizations that understand the importance of personnel management put
the proper resources into developing personnel policies.
In this topic, it was pointed out that in personnel management, the following factors are
vital: staying competitive, retention, teamwork, and managerial effectiveness. Emphasis was
given on developing training for employees and providing the resources they need to stay up-
to-date on their jobs as a part of personnel management. I also learned that when personnel
management is effective for each employee from the beginning of employment, it results in a
higher retention rate. Moreover, effective personnel management cultivates strong bonds
between the organization and the employee, and it also nourishes employees to develop a
sense of teamwork. I also understand from this topic that the employee-manager relationship is
important in a company because by developing the employee and the team, the staff
understands how its actions affect the productivity of the entire department. Furthermore,
communication at every level within the organization cannot be overemphasized. Systems of
communication are necessary to build relationships within and beyond nursing. Leadership in
nursing administration rests on the cultivation of shared leadership in daily practice, education,
research, management and administration.
Therefore, Nurse administrators set the tone and expectations in the workplace. We
must be bold and clear about what we expect, what is acceptable and what is not acceptable -
in nursing care, and in how we treat each other and work with others in the workplace.
Leadership in nursing administration requires that we accept and understand that we,
individually, are role models for what we expect in future leaders and exemplars for
practitioners and leaders alike.
