Introduction
A Computer performs many functions. It need a manager to control all the work. An
Operating System or OS is a special software that manages the general operation of a
computer system.
Some of the popular operating systems are MAC OS, Linux, UNIX, and Microsoft
Windows.
MS Windows
Windows is an operating system by the Microsoft company. MS stands for
Microsoft. It has different versions, such as Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows
XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 etc.
Windows 10 is the latest version of it. Windows is an operating system software
based on Graphical User Interface (GUI).
Booting
The very first thing that you should do for starting the computer, is switch on the
power button, and your computer will start booting and bring the Windows
Desktop.
Booting is actually the process of loading the operating system software from hard
disk to the RAM.
The Desktop
The first screen that appears on a computer monitor after the Windows Operating
System is loaded is called desktop. It has various component like – Wallpaper,
Icons, Taskbars, & Start button on it.
o Wallpaper
This is the picture in the background of the desktop. We see different
wallpaper on different computers. These wallpapers can be changed. The
wallpaper is also called desktop background.
o Icons
The small pictures on the desktop are called icons. When we double-click
on icon, files/folder gets opened or a program is started.
Some of the common icons on the desktop are My Computer (This PC)
and Recycle Bin.
o Taskbar
The taskbar is the long horizontal bar at the bottom of the computer
screen. Some of the important parts of the taskbar are shown in the figure
below.
Start button appear at the left corner of the taskbar. When we click on this
button, a list of options or programs appears. This list is called start menu.
Using search box, we can quickly look for program or an application in
the computer and open it.
Notification area is present on the right corner of the taskbar. It display
time, date and a group of small icon that tell us about the status of some
program running on the computer.
List of open programs also seen on taskbar which helps to navigate
between different programs by clicking on the icon.
The image that appear on screen when the computer is idle for a specified time is
called a screen saver. A screen saver helps to save energy – through the monitor.
To apply a screen saver, follow these steps:
1. Click on start button, type screen saver you will see list
in that select Change screen saver.
2.The Screen Saver
Setting dialog box is
displayed.
3.Select the Screen
Saver from the
Screen Saver drop-
down list.
4.In the Wait: box,
specify the minutes.
5.Click on the Preview button to check how
your screen saver will look like on the
screen
6. Click on Apply, and then click on OK button.
