Shelf Prep Study Guide
Clerkship evaluations depend on your preparedness, bedside manner, teamwork, and knowledge
base. Your final grade will also be determined in part by your performance on the Shelf exam. While
the Shelf exams serve as the focus of this course, we hope you find the guides, videos, and
questions in Shelf Prep to be helpful throughout your time on the wards and create a solid
foundation from which to begin your preparation for the USMLE Step 2 CK exam.
The Guides
Each Specialty begins with downloadable PDFs offering Tips for Success and Patient Notes. The Tips
for Success document summarizes the clinical experience, how to prepare for your Shelf exam, and
contains tips from current Residents and Attendings for how to excel during your clerkship. The
Patient Notes document provides examples with detailed advice for what elements you need to
include in your physical exams and write-ups.
The Videos
The videos in Shelf Prep provide a general overview of the topics you will need to know, not only for
your Shelf exams, but also to answer questions from attendings, residents, and patients during
your clerkships. Download the video slides PDF to preview before watching or print the file to take
notes. Within each video, a menu in the top left links to specific topics, as listed in the description of
each video on your Study Plan. Interactive questions allow you immediately recall the concepts
being covered. If possible, try to avoid reading the answers in your video slides PDF to allow these
questions to promote greater retention.
Each Specialty’s videos can be viewed whenever you think it is most beneficial for your studies.
Whether at the beginning, during, or end of your clerkship just before your exam, we hope you find
the review helpful and efficient.
The Questions
Each Specialty offers four types of questions:
2. Warm-up questions to complete before each set of videos to get your muscle memory
moving and help you identify areas of opportunity
3. Quiz questions to complete after each set of videos to diagnose and pinpoint any gaps in
your understanding
4. Assessment exams of 50-75 questions; complete 1-2 weeks prior to exam day to build
stamina and put into practice the concepts you have reviewed throughout your clerkship
