Pre-Colonial Period
1. Title of Art, Artist, Background of Art
The Itneg people are known for their intricate woven fabrics. The binakol is
a blanket which features designs that incorporate optical illusions. Woven
fabrics of the Ga’dang people usually have bright red tones. Their weaving can
also be identified by beaded ornamentation. Other peoples such as the Ilongot
make jewelry from pearl, red hornbill beaks, plants, and metals.
2. What is the artwork all about?
Traditionally, the Binakol is a ceremonial cloth used to cover corpses for

protection. The sacred fabric was also used as a sail on boats to calm the winds
and waters and seek protection from the spirits.
3. What is intending to communicate?

It tells that our country is rich in culture and tradition even if bfore the
colonization.
4. What is the meaning of the art?
Like I said, this binakol is used for covering corpses for protection, it doesn’t
really have a meaning because for the people back then, there was no meaning
of art.
Spanish Colonial Period
The Spoliarium is a painting by Filipino painter Juan Luna. Luna, working

on canvas, spent eight months completing the painting which depicts dying
gladiators. The painting was submitted by Luna to the Exposición Nacional de
Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, where it garnered the first gold medal.
It is a painting that features a glimpse of Roman history centered on the

bloody carnage brought by gladiatorial matches.
3. What is it intending to communicate?

` It may look pretty normal traditional painting for the eyes of others, but what
is Juan Luna really telling with his painting is to revolt against the Spaniards.
It is a series of symbolism, such as the women weeping at the side actually

symbolizes ‘Inang Bayan’. And the one that is being dragged away symbolizes
as the countrymen of Philippines that is being dragged away by the Romans,
which actually symbolizes the Spaniards. If you are going to examine this
artwork, it is controversial especially towards the Spaniards.
American Colonial Period
Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972) was a dominant figure in the visual arts of the
Philippines during the decades before the Second World War and into the post-war
period. The ‘Planting Rice with Mayon Volcano, Exhibits the happiness across
from the difficulties in planting rice.
It is also a painting that depicts the Filipino Villagers in the painting, who
are in their bright clothes and straw hats plant together with a fresh and green
landscape of plenty, behind the Filipino villagers is the peaceful flume of steam.
It talks about the culture and routine of the Filipinos in the old days and until
now, the simplicity in Filipinos is still present in our daily lives.

According from my perspective, Fernando Amorsolo was trying to
depict the simplicity of the Filipinos. The Filipinos in the picture have a
simple rural life; a simple activity makes them happy like this, which may
make the viewer change their opinion when it comes to the rural life.
Post-War Period

The Builders" (1928) is one of Victorio Edades' major works that he
exhibited in 1928 during his one-man show. Edades executed this upon his
return to the Philippines from studies in the United States. Today is the 31st
death anniversary of Victorio Edades, National Artist for Visual Arts.
This artwork emphasized linear and structural composition above
other pictorial elements, conveying the essence of men engaged in labor
through the contortion of the bodies.
It is trying to tell us the hardships of a worker through the form of

contortion to exaggerate their struggles and pains.
This painting may be controversial in the past because of its
unpleasant art style, but the hidden meaning of this artwork is all about how
these ‘builders’ or workers has to sacrifice their time, efforts and self just to
work hard for their families and dreams. This is basically what most of the
workers, either white-collared or blue-collared jobs, and it is undeniable that
working is indeed hard and it is a phase in your life that you can’t easily quit
especially if you have now entered the adulthood life.
