Decoding Module 3
/dēˈkōd/iNG
What is decoding?
Decoding is the ability to use, visual,
syntactic, or semantic cues to make
meaning from words and sentences.
This involves the brain’s ability to
rapidly match a letter or combination
of letters (graphemes) to the sounds
they produce (phonemes)... ...and to recognize the patterns that
make up the different syllables within
words.
visual cues: syntactic cues: semantic cues:
how the word looks how the sentences are how the word fits into the
the letters themselves structured context of the sentence as in
the letter combinations or how the words are ordered the part of speech
groupings and their the association with pictures
associated sounds the meaning cues in the
sentence
A student’s inability to successfully decode words can:
limit their vocabulary
create a lack of fluency in their reading
cause their reading comprehension to suffer
make the instruction of higher-level reading strategies ineffective
negatively affect their confidence, interest, and engagement in reading
