D. READING
Read the text careful and then answer the questions.

My Daily Routine

It seems my life is always very full of activities and obligations, so I never have much time
for myself. During the week it's the worst. I usually must get up at half past six even though
I would really prefer to sleep much later. After I get up, I perform my morning routine of
washing my face, brushing my teeth, and then deciding what to wear. After I get dressed,
I brush my hair. I usually don't have time for breakfast in the morning because I have to
catch a bus at seven o'clock for my commute to campus.

The bus is usually completely packed, and it really makes me envy my friends who don't
have to ride the bus to campus. Classes at school start at a quarter to eight except on
Tuesdays when they start at seven Each class has its own timetable, so my schedule
varies by class. Classes are forty-five i minutes long with ten minutes breaks, except for
one "long" break between the third and the fourth classes, which is twenty minutes long.
My classes take place either in our classroom or in various labs or a gym. After our
classes the students usually go for lunch to the canteen. Some students in their third and
Forth semester have afternoon classes, seminars, optional after-campus activities or
driving lessons.

After studying in my campus I sometimes shopping or just walk around the town 1 for a
while. When I get home, I like to relax for some time;1 listen to the radio, watch television,
and maybe get a little snack. Then 1 start my homework or help with some housework.
Before I know it, the afternoon is gone, and it is evening. In my family, we usually eat
dinner at about seven o'clock, at dinner we discuss what happened during the day and
catch up with each other’s' lives. After I help to clean up the dinner dishes, I either take a
shower or have a bath myself.

Then, I have some time to watch I the TV news. Sometimes I watch an interesting film or
music program on TV. Sometimes I like to go downtown to see a movie of to go to a
concert with my friends. About every other day I have a date with my boyfriend.
Sometimes he comes to watch TV at my home or we might go out for a walk. I usually
manage to go to bed around eleven p.m.
TOMMY HASTOMO, M.PD 12
That's all about my daily routine during the week. On the weekend it is a different story, I
like to sleep late and do whatever I wish with my free time. I am still expected to help my
parents out around the house, but I still have most of the time for myself and my interests.
I can go for a trip with my friends, I can visit my relatives, or I can devote more time to my
hobbies. I think everyone will agree that weekends are much better than weekdays.

Questions:
1. What is the writer's morning routine?
2. What time does the writer's class start on Tuesday?
3. How long does each class last?
4. According to the text, what places are used for learning?
5. Is the writer male or Female? How do you know?

E. WRITING
Write a text telling about your weekend routine.

Text 1

Networking as a concept has acquired what is in all truth an unjustified air of modernity.
It is considered in the corporate world as an essential tool for the modern businessperson,
as they trot round the globe drumming up business for themselves or a corporation. The
concept is worn like a badge of distinction, and not just in the business world.

People can be divided basically into those who keep knowledge and their personal
contacts to themselves, and those who are prepared to share what they know and indeed
their friends with others. A person who is insecure, for example someone who finds it
difficult to share information with others and who is unable to bring people, including
friends, together does not make a good networker. The classic networker is someone
who is strong enough within themselves to connect different people including close
friends with each other. For example, a businessman or an academic may meet someone
who is likely to be a valuable contact in the future, but at the moment that person may
benefit from meeting another associate or friend.

It takes quite a secure person to bring these people together and allow a relationship to
develop independently of himself. From the non-networker's point of view such a
development may be intolerable, especially if it is happening outside their control. The
unfortunate thing here is that the initiator of the contact, if he did but know it, would be the
one to benefit most. And why?

Because all things being equal, people move within circles and that person has the
potential of being sucked into ever growing spheres of new contacts. It is said that, if you
know eight people, you are in touch with everyone in the world. It does not take much
common sense to realize the potential for any kind of venture as one is able to draw on
the experience of more and more people.

Unfortunately, making new contacts, business or otherwise, while it brings success, does
cause problems. It enlarges the individual's world. This is in truth not altogether a bad
thing, but it puts more pressure on the networker through his having to maintain an ever
larger circle of people. The most convenient way out is, perhaps, to cull old contacts, but
this would be anathema to our networker as it would defeat the whole purpose of
networking. Another problem is the reaction of friends and associates. Spreading oneself
thinly gives one less time for others who were perhaps closer to one in the past. In the
workplace, this can cause tension with jealous colleagues, and even with superiors who
might be tempted to rein in a more successful inferior. Jealousy and envy can prove to
be very detrimental if one is faced with a very insecure manager, as this person may seek
to stifle someone's career or even block it completely.

TOMMY HASTOMO, M.PD 18

The answer here is to let one's superiors share in the glory; to throw them a few crumbs
of comfort. It is called leadership from the bottom. In the present business climate,
companies and enterprises need to co-operate with each other in order to expand. As
globalization grows apace, companies need to be able to span not just countries but
continents. Whilst people may rail against this development it is for the moment here to
stay. Without co-operation and contacts, specialist companies will not survive for long.
Computer components, for example, need to be compatible with the various machines on
the market and to achieve this, firms need to work in conjunction with others. No business
or institution can afford to be an island in today's environment. In the not very distant past,
it was possible for companies to go it alone, but it is now more difficult to do so.

The same applies in the academic world, where ideas have been jealously guarded. The
opening-up of universities and colleges to the outside world in recent years has been of
enormous benefit to industry and educational institutions. The stereotypical academic is
one who moves in a rarefied atmosphere living a life of sometimes splendid isolation, a
prisoner of their own genius. This sort of person does not fit easily into the mould of the
modern networker. Yet even this insular world is changing. The ivory towers are being
left ever more frequently as educational experts forge links with other bodies; sometimes
to stunning effect as in Silicon Valley in America and around Cambridge in England, which
now has one of the most concentrated clusters of high tech companies in Europe.

It is the networkers, the wheeler-dealers, the movers and shakers, call them what you
will, that carry the world along. The world of the Neanderthals was shaken between
35,000 and 40,000 BC; they were superseded by Homo Sapiens with the very
'networking' skills that separate us from other animals: understanding, thought abstraction
and culture, which are inextricably linked to planning survival and productivity in humans.
It is said the meek will inherit the earth. But will they?

Questions 1-5

Do the following statements agree with the information given in Reading Passage written
above?

YES if the statement agrees with the writer's claims

NO if the statement contradicts the writer's claims
NOT GIVEN if there is impossible to say what the writer thinks about this

1. Networking is not a modern idea.

2. Networking is worn like a badge exclusively in the business world.
3. People fall into two basic categories.

Global Trade

In an open market, any number of sellers or competitors can offer goods for sale. All
companies try to gain the biggest market share possible, and compete aggressively with
their main competitors to do this. Companies with the biggest market share for a product,
the market leaders, may compete with their rivals on quality, image, brand loyalty or price.
Major companies compete across borders in the global market place to try to enter new
markets in countries where they do not have a presence.

Global trade, also known as international trade, is simply the exchange of goods and
services across international boundaries. Global trade involves the export and import of
goods and services between international borders. Goods and services that enter into a
country for sale are called imports. Goods and services that leave a country for sale in
another country are called exports. For example, a country may import wheat because it
does not have much arable land but export oil because it has oil in abundance.

Compare and Contrast Essay

The purpose of a compare and contrast essay is to analyze the differences and/or
the similarities of two distinct subjects. A good compare/contrast essay doesn’t only
point out how the subjects are similar or different (or even both!). It uses those points
to make a meaningful argument about the subjects. While it can be a little intimidating
to approach this type of essay at first, with a little work and practice, you can write a
great compare-and-contrast essay!

US vs Chinese Economics

When it comes to understanding the economics of the United States and China, some
often think the United States has a stronger economy. This was the case for several
decades but recent studies now show the Chinese economy is stronger than the US.
In short, in recent years the Chinese has been more productive than the Americans.
Many people can actually understand this concept. Both economies continue to grow
and flourish, but what elements actually help determine which economy is the
strongest or most productive?

The United States and China both pull in trillions of dollars annually, which to some
may not seem like a lot of money depending on the perspective of the situation. The
Americans have produced and pulled in roughly three times as much as the Chinese
in the last 10 to 20 years. One element that has helped the Chinese become a more
powerful nation is their ability to purchase goods. In short, it seems some have
underestimated China’s ability and the decisions they have made for their economy.
Another decision that made a difference for China includes deciding to make changes
to how they purchase gross domestic products on an international level.

From other circumstances the United States economy seems a little bigger. Some
analysts feel the US economy doesn’t really shrink too much but they question it
when other currencies make changes to how much they are worth (in other
countries). This element is somewhat crucial to the power of each country. When
each has a steadily growing economy it also means other aspects such as its military
and political powers are gaining strength as well. The face the Chinese is gaining
more strength in the global economy shows there could be some shifting going on
economists are not aware of.

Even though each country has its shares of wars, economic crashes, and conflicts
with other international governments, they are each holding their own while battling
for the top economic spot. Yet, each country still has a number of flaws to deal with
on their own soil. These conflicts tend to have greater effects on their economy on a
number of levels. You want people to be able to work and thrive in their society. There

are times costly tragedies and conflicts within the political world slow down progress.
The US has lost a number of jobs to China, and some feel this could affect how the
US retains its top position on the economic scale.
