THE BENEFITS OF ICT

The twenty-first century has been characterized as the information age. No
doubt, one of the great achievements of this age has something to do with
technology, especially the increasing power of communications. Its importance
cannot be overemphasized. The rapid technological advancement ushers an era
where information and communications are at the tip of one’s finger. The different
information and communication tools and devices that flood the market that are
available for users of all ages have accelerated significantly, permitting almost every
aspect of life spheres of a person’s activity.
One way to describe the rapid acceleration of technology in relation to
information and communications is simply to be aware of the evolution of some
communication tools (e.g., the transition of the telegraph to e-mail, of wired
telephones to cellular phones, of typewriters to computers, and many more). Another
way is to look back at those times when computers were not yet tools for
communication, but simply used for data storage. When computers started to be
linked to outside terminals, it resulted to greater services, like the transmission of
digital data. The connection of telephones to computers contributed to the capability
of computers to be developed as an entire communication system.
The internet facility is not solely used for data transmission, but also for
electronic mail, voice and video, and teleconferencing purposes. Undeniably, the
computer system has an overabundance of different applications that are available
for people of various ages (e.g., social networking sites, YouTube, blogs, webcam,
and so on).
How has ICT possibly affected the life of the members of the society or the digital
citizens? The following serve as examples:
Education. Many educators are already using and infusing technology as
a teaching-learning tool through the use of different platforms (e.g., Moodle,
Edmodo, Edublogs, among others). For students, the different search engines,
online libraries, and the like are useful tools in researching different topics
relevant to their subjects or courses.
Business. Most entrepreneurs use the internet and different social
networking sites to promote their businesses and products. Through the use of
the Internet and mobile phones, they are able to reach a wider range and bigger
number of possible customers.
Government. In the Philippines, many transactions with government
offices are now possible and available online. Applications for birth certificate,
passport, NBI, among others are maximized by citizens. This contributes to the
reduction of transaction costs (e.g., transportation costs in getting to and fro
offices and the number of hours spent queuing).
Computers, electronic mail, Internet, fax machines, and mobile phones are
among the information and communications tools that can be considered as integral
part of work activities in almost all companies or institutions in the Philippines and
abroad. Some companies, like educational institutions, are already making use of
social media as an avenue for making announcements and sharing important
information, events, and achievements of the institution to the public.

in the world.

ICT AND GLOBAL NETWORKS

As society changes, so do the skills that are necessary for survival. These
skills include critical thinking and problem-solving skills, communication skills,
creativity, and innovation. ICT provides an extraordinary opportunity to hone these
skills. The advent of the Internet empowers learners to go beyond the confines of
their classrooms and access more information on the topics they are discussing in
class. ICT, as applied to education, creates a positive impact, enabling learners to
learn at their own pace. There are numerous researches that show how the
integration of ICT in the curriculum leads students to be more productive, self-
confident, and motivated to excel in class.
Classrooms are transformed into a complex learning environment where
technology transmits sounds, pictures, and written documents around the globe in
seconds. With ICT in our schools, learners are not only consumers, but content
creators as they write, edit, publish, participate, co-create, and collaborate with
others through the use of technologies. The widespread use of wireless networking
technologies and mobile applications enable users to become content producers.
The transformation of ICT brought varied opportunities in the way we access
scientific data and information. Using technology to communicate and collaborate
across different countries creates a more global learning environment, allows cross-
cultural studies, and enhances understanding and appreciation of education in
contexts other than our own (Driscoll, 2007, p. 12). The open exchange of
information made possible by the Internet and other Information technologies has
revolutionized communication. Indeed, once we understand these forms of
technology, become familiar with them, and appreciate their ever-changing nature,
we can also truly evolve with them and become competitive in our global society.
Furthermore, ICT hastens global and democratic networks across the planet.
The Internet is not only a tool for casual interaction, but also becomes a democratic
public sphere where people voice out their concerns (that they are unable to do
otherwise) and where citizens generate awareness over various social issues. In a
globally networked society, barriers and limitations are continuously being lifted. It is
3
through these global networks that information and power flow. Networks among
communities and nations now become a norm where they forge support and
solidarity on the different issues they are facing.
Let us take the case of Facebook. Its transformation has led to an addition of
features and an increase in its applications, aside from being a mode of
communication among friends or acquaintances internationally. It became a platform
for sharing everything from ideas games, pictures, travels, favorite quotes, and latest
and cool applications to global events. Hence, it generates social awareness and
advocacy on global issues.
If abuse surfaces on the use of these social sites, it boils down to the user’s
responsibility. The irresponsible use of social media harms relationships especially
when users transform them into a platform for hate speeches, recruitment of terrorist,
racist advocacies, and dissention in the community.
ICT generates global social awareness through social network sites. It
facilitates the mobilization of movements across the planet to stand against human
rights violation and protect the Earth by urging developed countries to reduce their
carbon emission and ensure a clean to reduce their carbon emission and ensure a
clean, credible, and transparent national election. In the Philippines, what triggered
the exposure of the controversial Priority Development Assistance Fund or “pork-
barrel scam” involving high ranking officials was the use of social media. Netizens
were enraged about this political scandal resulting to the Million People March
petition to totally abolish the Pork Barrel Fund. Through social media, a nationwide
protest was staged in Luneta on August 26, 2013- a massive rally mobilized through
social media channels. Moreover, residents of poor countries use the Internet to
access information, get the latest updates on anything and connect with their loved
ones who are working overseas.
Also some professionals in the academe and health sectors are given access
to online materials like journals, e-books, and other publications, which are
expensive and remote in the market. When they avail online or distance education
provided by the government, agencies, or corporate foundations, ICT is used to
acquire the necessary skills they need in their field of specialization.
When ICT is used responsibly, it can be a powerful tool and a platform to
impact change in the individual, local, and global arena. It facilitates a healthy
discussion among peoples and communities of good will to work on social issues
whether these are in the local or international platform. It provides access,
knowledge, and alliances to policymakers and advocates in their agenda. Online
business is becoming a trend and users earn income with the skills they have online.
Indeed, ICT potentially enhances the quality of life and well-being of many
citizens across the planet. It facilitates social development characterized by sharing
and democratic participation. Technological advances have improved life and
brought the world’s people closer. Given the wide variety of benefits of ICT, humanity
has to harness this potential in the promotion of justice, peace, and integrity of
creation.
