About this manual
This manual contains all the information and details that are necessary for the assembly,
commissioning and the programming of a SELECONTROL PMC 20 control system.
In connection with this work and for your own safety we would kindly ask you to refer
to the section entitles "Safety considerations concerning the user".

SELECONTROL control technique
Efficient control and drive systems form the basis for the economical automation of
machines, plant, procedures and processes.
Selectron opens up new possibilities with the range of SELECONTROL PMC
automation systems. These systems are outstanding because of their remarkable,
advanced features concerning their hardware concept, programming, diagnostic and
communication facilities.
The user is hence assured of economical and future-orientated solutions for control,
measurement, regulation, positioning and communication tasks.
Features of the SELECONTROL PMC automation systems:

SELECONTROL PMC 10
The SELECONTROL® PMC 10 is a feature-packed PLC in a single Euro-board
format. The basic unit is equipped with 16 inputs, 16 outputs, 4 analog timers, 4 analog
inputs and an RS 232C (V24) interface.
The system can be extended to provide up to 160 inputs/outputs by adding expansion
boards.

SELECONTROL PMC 20
The SELECONTROL® PMC 20 is available in various versions and stages of
expansion covering the range from 24 to 144 inputs/outputs. In addition to the digital
I/O's there are also 8 analog inputs/timers.
Fast counters and 1 analog output are available as options and so too are
communication interfaces for networking the systems.

SELECONTROL PMC 30
The SELECONTROL® PMC 30 can be modularly adapted at any time to meet current
or future demands. A wide choice of processor modules, communication processors,
digital and analog inputs/outputs and analog timers is available. A system can be
expanded up to a maximum of 256 inputs/outputs (16 modules).
Numerous SELECONTROL® PMC 20 and PMC 30 Controllers can be linked together
via a local area network (LAN) and are thus able to handle several thousand
inputs/outputs.

Programming
The comprehensive instruction set supports : • logic operations
• digit, byte and word processing
• counters and timers
• arithmetic operations
• analog value processing
• communications
• comparison operations
• shift registers
• code changers
• jump functions
• indirect addressing
• sequential routines
• etc.

The programming of machine and process sequences is simplified considerably by the


SELECONTROL® -programming technique. Thanks to the freely programmable PMC
routines (step counters, Grafcet), the programs can be clearly structured, are simple to
write and quick to test.
Each procedure for the machine or installation under control is assigned to one step or
routine (step counter). The next program step is only carried out if the corresponding
conditions have been fulfilled. The operational security is thus considerably enhanced
without the need to program-in complicated interlocks. Each current program step can
be shown on the LC-display of the SELECONTROL® PMC Controller as it happens.
Programs with arbitrary forward and backward jumps make it possible to build up
simple and flexible programs. Programming by means of sequences of steps
considerably eases both machine and process diagnoses.
Programs can be created from arbitrary types of documentation such as flow charts,
path-time diagrams, Grafcet, function plans, contact switching plans, etc. The
SELECONTROL®-programming technique reduces the costs for preparing programs,
program documentation and program testing by up to 50%.

Programming systems
SELECONTROL® PMC Controllers can be readily programmed with any
commercially available ASCII terminal or personal computer. No special application
software or any communications interface is necessary between the programming
system and the Controller while, even today, other types of controller still need special
programming equipment or equipment-specific software.
Feature-filled SELECONTROL® software packets are available for highly convenient
programming with a personal computer (MS-DOS).

Sequence analysis and process diagnosis


Experience has shown that, in an automated installation, at least 90% of the faults that
occur result from causes other than from within the controller. Loose screw
connections, broken wires, defective limit switches or initiators, tripped over-current
devices as well as operational errors are the most frequent causes of operating
breakdowns. It is therefore logical that the PLC should take over the tasks of machine
and process diagnoses besides carrying out its own control functions.
SELECONTROL® PMC Controllers are equipped with an LC-display that is freely
programmable to provide information about the running of the program, operational
statuses, elapsed times, the contents of counters, measured values and much more.
The current step in the sequence for the machine under control is shown continuously.
The fault can be quickly localised by reference to the program step display and with the
help of an LED interface display (fault diagnosis).
Production stoppages and machine down-times are therefore considerably reduced.
Even remote diagnoses are possible and have often proved invaluable in practice.
Man-machine communication is thus readily achieved with the SELECONTROL®
PMC without any additional outlay in programming effort.

Communication
In the CIM-age, the link-up of systems and communications between man and machine
is of growing importance.
SELECONTROL® PMC Controllers already fulfil tomorrow's needs for applications in
the "Factory of the Future". All the SELECONTROL® PMC Controllers are capable of
communicating with host computers via their RS 232C programming interfaces. The
SELECONTROL® PMC 20 and PMC 30 are capable of communicating and
networking via the Intel Bitbus.
The communications partner can be an IBM-PC or a compatible system running under
the MS-DOS operating system, the SELEDATA® MPS 50 or an external Bitbus
system.
A commercially available monitor or other clear-text display can be hooked up to the
RS 232C interface that is integrated into all PMC systems.

Installation and cabling


Modern control systems must be as compact as possible, should be easy to install and
be able to be cabled rationally.
Because of the SMD-technique used, the SELECONTROL® PMC Controllers are up to
four times more compact than comparable systems.
Pluggable terminal strips make the cabling simple, quick and clear.
The SELECONTROL® PMC 10 is suitable for simple, space-saving mounting in a 19"
or a mini-rack.
The SELECONTROL® PMC 20 can be mounted directly on a DIN rail.
The SELECONTROL® PMC 30 is suitable for back-plane mounting with rigid module
guides or, alternatively, for 19" rack-mounting using the appropriate accessories.

System commissioning is made very much simpler and shorter through the
SELECONTROL® programming technique. The Programming and Service Units are
provided with comprehensive programming and test aids.
Operational statuses and process sequences are shown in a constantly updated form on
the LC-display which makes fault diagnosis considerably easier. An automation
program can be tested on a step-by-step basis without the need for additional
programming effort.
These and many further advanced features ensure that the user enjoys continuous
success at the forefront of modern control techniques. Allow yourself to be convinced
of the leading technology; and that in Swiss quality, too.

PLC training
Training and advanced courses are gaining in importance in the field of industrial
automation. A thorough knowledge of the application possibilities and the operation of
the equipment and systems ensures optimum utilisation of the potential afforded by
modern electronics. We would therefore recommend that you, too, should attend a
seminar dealing to the practical aspects of the matter.

Quality assurance means and tests


Quality control is carried out following strict, company-internal guidelines. A function
test of the specified parameters is carried out on each unit. Following this, the unit is
subjected to a second function test with parameter testing.
The interference immunity is tested with interference simulators according to the IEC
Draft Standard TC 65/WG 4 which defines the necessary interference immunity for
measurement and control systems for industrial processes.
