STANDARD DIMENSIONS FOR AUSTRALIAN

KITCHENS (ILLUSTRATED)
Is your existing bench height in your kitchen too low? What height should it
really be? Having standard dimensions certainly makes life easier for kitchen
designers as it provides a solid, workable framework to develop an e cient
and safe design.
This is a summary of preferred standard dimensions for most kitchens built

in Australia today. Having standard dimensions certainly makes life easier for
novices and kitchen designers alike!
KICKBOARD HEIGHT
The preferred kickboard height is 150 mm. The height range can be

between 100 mm to 200 mm. The kickboard depth (from the front of the
oor cabinet carcass excluding the door) is 50 mm. (Fig 1)

STANDARD KITCHEN BENCHTOP HEIGHT
This is the distance between the oor and the top of the benchtop. The
recommended standard kitchen benchtop height is 900 mm +/- 20
mm. However, the working height can be within the range of 850 mm to
1050 mm. (Fig. 2)
BENCHTOP DEPTH
A lot of people confuse benchtop width with the depth. Benchtops can be
any width (and that depends on the material used for the benchtop)
however, the most common depth for benchtops in Australia today is
600 mm deep. (Older kitchens usually have a standard benchtop depth of

450 mm).

The benchtop edge overhang is 20mm from the front face (door /

drawer) of the oor cabinet.
STANDARD BENCHTOP THICKNESS
The most common benchtop material is laminate and it’s standard

thickness is 33 mm. It is made with a 32 mm thick particle board or MDF
substrate and a 0.8 mm thick piece of laminate glued to it.
Of course the thickness of the benchtop will vary as it is dependent on the

type of material used. Other benchtop materials include granite, limestone
or engineered stones such as Caesarstone. They are usually 20 mm thick
slabs and for thicker tops, the edge is built up by another 20 mm.
Laminate benchtop thickness = 33 mm

Granite / limestone thickness = 20 mm (or 40 mm with built up edge)
Caesarstone (engineered stone) = 20 mm (or 40 mm with built up
edge)
You must be mindful when working with benchtop heights around the 1050
mm height range. Appliances such as dishwashers will end up having a large
gap between itself and the benchtop. You could consider raising the height
of the dishwasher by putting a drawer underneath it or by putting a drawer
above it.

FLOOR CABINETS
The standard height for oor cabinets is 720 +1/-4 mm (not including

the kickboard). Floor cabinet depth ideally should not exceed 600 mm
(handles excluded). The standard oor cabinet depth is 580
mm inclusive of door thickness.
Standard dimensions for stock or DIY base ( oor) cabinets are 720 mm high
by 560 mm deep (without the door). Floor cabinet widths generally increase
by 150 mm increments (Fig. 3). The maximum door width for a base cabinet
is 600 mm. This is due to the door weight loading on the door hinges.

Standard Dimensions For Stock / DIY Wall Cabinets
The standard height for wall cabinets is 720 +1/-4 mm. Wall cabinet
depth ideally should not exceed 350 mm (handles excluded). There should
be 280 mm minimum clear space from the back of the cupboard. I
personally prefer a 300 mm minimum clear space so you can store large
diameter plates with ease.
Standard dimensions for stock or DIY wall cabinets are 720 mm high by 300
mm deep (without the door). As for the oor cabinets, wall cabinet widths
generally increase by 150 mm increments (Fig 4).

STANDARD TALL CABINET HEIGHT
The standard height for tall cabinets (pantry, wall oven etc) is

2073mm +/- 20mm. (Fig. 5) The height is determined by adding up the oor
cabinet height, benchtop thickness, splashback height and wall cabinet
height (720 mm + 33 mm + 600 mm + 720 mm = 2073 mm +/- 20
mm). The standard tall cabinet depth is 600 mm.
STANDARD KITCHEN HEIGHT
The standard kitchen height is 2223mm +/- 20mm. (Fig. 5) The height is

determined by adding up the kickboard height, oor unit height, benchtop
thickness, splashback height and wall unit height (150 mm + 720 mm + 33

mm + 600 mm + 720 mm = 2223 mm +/- 20 mm).

SPLASHBACK HEIGHT (UNDER WALL CABINETS)
The minimum splashback height is 450 mm. If you have a wall unit over
a sink then there should be a minimum of 600 mm splashback height
between the top of the sink and the bottom of the wall unit.
RANGEHOOD HEIGHT ABOVE GAS COOKTOP
The minimum height of the rangehood above a gas hob is 650 mm. Most
manufacturers recommend a minimum height of 700 – 750 mm.
OVEN / WALL OVEN DIMENSIONS
The standard under bench oven size is 600 mm wide x 600 mm high.

The under bench oven can be used as a wall oven (and vice-versa). Pizza
oven types are usually 900 mm wide x 600 mm high.
Wall oven dimensions are normally 600 mm wide x 600 mm high or 600 mm
wide x 900 mm high. Occasionally wall ovens can be 900 mm wide x 600
mm high (e.g pizza ovens).
FREESTANDING OVEN DIMENSIONS
Standard sizes of kitchen appliances such as free standing ovens or ranges

(be they gas or electric) come in ve standard widths.

These are nominal dimensions (i.e not exact but very close to) as di erent
appliance manufacturers have varying standards.
Having standard dimensions certainly makes life easier for kitchen designers
as it provides a solid, workable framework to develop an e cient and safe
design.

when designing a kitchen. These standards are very important as they are
issued by a professional or governmental regulatory authority and certain
