IIT KHARAGPUR
Spring 2018
Subject Code: MA41022 Subject Name: Partial differential equations
Assignment 2

1. Verify that the following Pfaffian differential equations are exact/integrable and
find the corresponding integrals.

(a) (y 2 + yz)dx + (xz + z 2 )dy + (y 2 − xy)dz = 0

(b) (1 + yz)dx + x(z − x)dy − (1 + xy)dz = 0
(c) yzdx + (x2 y − zx)dy + (x2 z − xy)dz = 0
(d) (6x + yz)dx + (xz − 2y)dy + (xy + 2z)dz = 0
(e) (1 + yz)dx + z(z − x)dy − (1 + xy)dz = 0

2. Show that the PDEs f = p2 + q 2 − 4 = 0 and g = (p2 + q 2 )y − qz = 0 are

compatible and find their common one parameter family of solutions.

3. Can you give an example of two PDEs, say f (x, y, z, p, q) = 0 and g(x, y, z, p, q) =
0 such that ∂(f,g)
∂(p,q) 6= 0 and dz = p(x, y, z)dx + q(x, y, z)dy is not integrable. If
not give justification.

4. Find complete integrals of the following PDEs.

(a) px5 − 4q 3 x2 + 6x2 z − 2 = 0

(b) 2z + p2 + qy + 2y 2 = 0
(c) 2x(z 2 q 2 + 1) = pz
(d) z(p2 + q 2 ) + px + qy = 0
(e) z + xp − x2 yq 2 − x3 pq = 0
(f) z 2 (p2 z 2 + q 2 ) = 1

5. Solve the following PDEs by Jacobi’s method.

(a) x2 ux − u2y − 2u2z = 0

(b) xux + yuy = u2x
(c) z 3 = pqxy
(d) p = (z + qy)2

6. Give an example of three PDEs, f (x, y, z, ux , uy , uz ) = 0, g(x, y, z, ux , uy , uz ) =

∂(f,g,h)
0 and h(x, y, z, ux , uy , uz ) = 0 such that ∂(ux ,uy ,uz )
6= 0 but du = ux (x, y, z)dx +
uy (x, y, z)dy + uz (x, y, z)dz is not integrable.
