Basketball Referee Hand Signals on Violation

Objectives
1. Have a deeper understanding on the different violations of basketball
2. Execute the hand signals of basketball violations.

Basketball Violation
It is an illegal move made by a player on the playing court. When referees call a violation,
they blow their whistle to call the attention of the players and stop the play. Then raise one hand
with open palm.

On the court against the players

 Travelling – it is an illegal movement committed by a

player who has the ball taking 3 or more steps without
dribbling.

Execution: Two hands in chest level, rotating them at

least twice in outward motion.

 Double Dribble – it is a violation called when a

player who is in possession of the ball losses
his/her dribble commits another dribble without
passing the ball to his/her teammate first or without
interception from any player on the other team.

Execution: Raise both hands not lower than waist

level with the palms facing down. Then, alternately
moving them up (not higher than chest level) and
down to the original position.
 Step-in-the-line – a violation when a player who is
in possession of the ball stepped-in the line (baseline
or sideline of the court).

Execution: Stand on the side of the court where the

player who has the ball stepped on the line. With
open palm, point the line where the player stepped
and swing the hand on the shoulder level pointing on
the direction of the line.

 Backcourt – a violation occur when a player or a team

who made a successful play transferring the ball from
the opponents’ court to their court, then stepped on
the Center-line or dribbled or passed the ball back on
the other court without interception from any player on
the other team.

Execution: stand in-lined to the center line with one

hand extend on the direction of it, then point the two
courts with the extended hand to show the ball/player
went to the back court illegally.

 Illegal carrying of the ball/lifting – illegal move by the

player who has the possession of the ball (dribbler) by
allowing the ball rest on his/her palm with the ball directly
above it. Legal dribble is executed with the palm directly
above the ball or on the side of the ball, but not under the
ball.

Execution: extend one hand sideward on the level

between the shoulder and the waist with the palm
facing up, then move the hand in front travelling with
arc motion to show that the ball was carried before it
was dribbled.
Against the clock

 Shot-clock violation – a violation against a team who

is in possession of the ball when the 14 or 24 seconds
on their time run-out without taking a shot or the ball
hasn’t made a contact on their ring.

Execution: simply reach both shoulders with both hands

 5 seconds – a time violation during throw-in

situation, when a player entitled to the throw-in
failed pass the ball to any player in the court.

Execution: simply raise one hand showing 5 fingers

as to signify the five seconds and it was expired.

 3 seconds – a time violation called to an offensive

player who then move to the painted area (from the
free-throw line to the baseline under the ring) and
stayed there for 3 seconds
.

Execution: point 3 fingers (thumb, index and middle)

on the painted area where the player stayed at, then
point to the player.
