General Information Two-stroke Low Speed
The ME programme
The basic goal by creating a new generation of electronically controlled diesel
engines is to reduce operating costs, to increase reliability and to provide a high
degree of flexibility in terms of operating modes and programs.
The MC Programme
The MAN B&W Diesel two-stroke MC engines are characterised by having
mechanically driven camshaft controlled timing of fuel injection, exhaust valves,
starting air valves and cylinder lubrication, of which only the fuel injection can be
adjusted while the engine is running.
It should be noted that the MC engines listed on page 7 are available with the
same power and speed as the corresponding ME engines.
Turbocharger Choice
Two-stroke low speed engines can be delivered with MAN B&W, ABB or
Mitsubishi turbochargers as standard.
9
Engine Power
The engine brake power is stated in kW
kW. Conversions between kW and metric
horsepower (1 bhp = 75 kpm/s = 0.73549875 kW) are subject to the rounding of
numbers.
The power figures in the tables remain valid up to tropical conditions at sea level, i.e.:
• Blower inlet temperature 45 °C
• Blower inlet pressure 1,000 mbar
• Seawater temperature 32 °C
The SFOC figures are given in g/kWh with a tolerance of 5% and are based on
the use of a fuel with a lower calorific value of 42,700 kJ/kg (~10,200 kcal/kg) at
ISO conditions:
• 1,000 mbar ambient air pressure
• 25 °C ambient air temperature
• 25 °C cooling water temperature
Layout Diagram
The layout diagram applicable for the MC engines is defined Power L1
by the power and speed combinations L1 - L2 - L3 and L4,
with L1 indicating the Nominal Maximum Continuous Rating. L3
L2
Any combination of speed and power within the layout
diagram may be used for selecting the Specified MCR and L4 Speed
the Optimising point.

Specific Cylinder Oil Consumption
The figures given in this booklet represent values based on research as well as
service experience.
The MAN B&W Alpha Lubricators in the basic execution include the Alpha ACC
(Adaptive Cylinder oil Control) principle, where the cylinder oil dosage is propor-
tional to the amount of sulphur percentage in the fuel and the engine load (i.e. the
amount of fuel entering the cylinders).
MAN B&W Alpha Cylinder Lubricators with MEP dependent feed rate control is an
option.
Using Alpha ACC, the typical saving, depending on sulphur percentage (S%) and
average load, will be 25 – 30% (0.1 – 0.25 g/kWh), compared to Alpha Lubricator
in MEP control mode.

Load Diagram
The load diagram defines the power and speed limits for continuous as well as
overload operation of an installed engine having a specified MCR point ‘M’ that
meets the ship’s specification.

12
12
Point ‘A’ is a 100% speed and power reference point of the load diagram, and is
defined as the point on the propeller curve (line 1) through the optimising point
‘O’, having the specified MCR power.
The service points of the installed engine incorporate the engine power required
for ship propulsion and shaft generator, if installed.
Optimising Point
The optimising point for the engines of the MC programme is the rating at which
the engine timing and compression ratio are adjusted, and at which the SFOC
guarantee is normally given.
The optimising point has no relevance for the electronically controlled engines of
the ME programme as these are automatically optimised over a wide power
range.
The optimising point ‘O’ has to be the specified MCR ‘M’ for the types:
S46MC-C, S42MC, L42MC, S35MC, L35MC and S26MC.
13
Coagency of SFOC and Exhaust Gas Data
For enhancing waste heat recovery application (power turbines and turbo
generator) possibilities, the matching of the engine and the turbocharging system
can be modified for increasing the exhaust gas temperature, thereby gaining a net
power of up to 10%, and reducing CO2 emission correspondingly.
This modification will lead to a reduction in the exhaust gas amount and involves a
minor increase in SFOC of the engine.
Such projects will be particularly relevant for high powered engines and will be
calculated case-by-case.
Emission Control
All engines in this booklet comply with the IMO speed dependent NOx emission
limitations according to Annex VI og MARPOL 73/78, measured according to the
ISO 8178 test cycles E2/E3 for Heavy Duty Diesel Engines.
Dry masses
The masses are stated for engines with MAN B&W turbocharger(s), and a
standard turning wheel and can vary up to 10% depending on the design and
options chosen, such as moment compensators, tuning wheel, etc.
The masses in the tables are valid for MC engines. For ME engines they will be
about 5% lower.
The minimum lengths Lmin are stated from the aft end of the crankshaft to the fore
end of the engine footprint.
The performance data are the same as for the diesel version stated in this booklet.

General information Four-stroke Marine Engines
1. Load limit
2. Recommended combinator curve
3. Zero thrust curve
■ Operating range
The combinator curve has to have a sufficient distance to the limit curve 1. For
overload protection, a load control is to be provided.
Transmission losses (e.g. by gearboxes and shaft power) and additional power
requirements (e.g. by PTO) are to be considered.
45
Four-stroke Marine Engines General information
Emission Control
All four-stroke engines in this booklet will be delivered so as to comply with the
IMO speed dependent NOX limit, measured according to the ISO 8178 test
cycles E2/E3 for Heavy Duty Diesel Engines.
IS Engines
The MAN B&W four-stroke diesel engine 48/60 can be delivered in IS design
(II nvisible S moke). All other larger engines are available on request. For further
information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Engines for NOX values far below the IMO NOX limit-value curve are available on
request. MAN B&W Diesel is prepared to deliver NOX reduction systems like SCR
(Selective Catalytic Reduction), FWE (Fuel-Water Emulsion) and HAM (Humid Air
Motor).

General information Four-stroke Marine Engines
General Definition of Diesel Engine
Ratings (acc. to ISO 3046-1: 2002)
The fuel consumption rates are based on ISO reference conditions and a lower
calorific value of the fuel of 42,700 kJ/kg without engine driven pumps.
Attached pumps and engines run in suction dredger operation will require an
additional fuel consumption.
Blocking of the output is made for engines driving a generator, at 110% of the
rated output. Overload > 100% may only be run for a short time for recovery and
preventing a frequency drop in case of load application.
Overload > 100% may only be run for a short time for recovery and preventing a
frequency drop in case of load application.

Overload of 10% of the continuous power is available for a period of 1 hour in 12,
except for VP185 and gas fuelled engines.
Engine outputs for power generation are shown in kWe, and assume 96%
alternator efficiency.
Outputs will vary according to actual alternator efficiency. The engines are rated to
deliver power for continuous base load power generation in accordance with ISO

MAN B&W Controllable Pitch Propeller
The standard propeller programme basically comprises two types:
Type VBS - features propeller blade pitch setting by a hydraulic servo piston
integrated in the propeller hub.
The figures stated after VBS indicate the propeller hub diameter.
The propellers are based on ‘no ice’ but are available up to the highest ice
classes.
