Module 4 Truth
Module 4 Truth
1. Overview
Jesus said, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you
will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:31-32). He added, “But
whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his good works may be clearly
seen as done in God (John 3:21). Sometimes, “The truth can be hidden for a time,
but it cannot be overcome (St. Augustine).
We continue with PAGKAMAKA-TAO. Under this core value you will
try to understand another Good Citizenship Value and that is Truth.
3. Content/ Discussion
Introduction
If you were to be asked, “Which is more visible or observable in our society: “Truth
or Lies,” what would be your answer? What about in your life?
Let us take our society. There are some major issues in our society dealing
with the value of truth. We can see unexplained wealth of public officials, dishonesty
in public offices. The truth about the “Terror Bill.” The hidden real cause of Filipino’s
suffering, misery and ever increasing rate of poverty. Have you given these issues a
thought? How do you feel?
If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything- Mark Twain (1835-1910)
Where is there dignity unless there is honesty? –Cicero (106 BC-43 BC)
Son, always tell the truth. Then you’ll never have to remember what you said the last
time. Sam Rayburn (1882-1961), Quoted Washingtonian, November 1978

Our lives improve only when we take chances – and the first and most difficult risk
we can take is to be honest with ourselves. - Walter Anderson
Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just
because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient
books. Believe nothing just because it is said in divine origin. Believe nothing just
because someone else believe it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be
true. -Buddha
Most truths are so naked that people feel sorry for them and cover them up, at least
a little bit, - Edward R. Murrow
If it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it. –Marcus Aurelius
It is not the possession of truth, but the success which attends the seeking after it,
that enriches the seeker and brings happiness to him. – Max Planck
If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.
– Virginia Woolfe
Lies
False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil. –Plato
(427-347 BC), Dialogues, Phaedo
Repetition does not transform lie into truth. –franklin D. Roosevelt, (1882-1945)
Radio Address, October 26, 1939
Liars when they speak the truth are not believed. – Aristotle (384-322 BC), from
Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers
O what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!- Sir Walter Scott
(1771-1832) Marmion, Canto vi. Stanza 17.
A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.
–Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
Lying is done with words and also with silence –Adrienne Rich
Nothing is easier than self- deceit. For what each man wishes that he also believes to
be true. –Demosthenes
People never lie so much as after a hunt, during a war or before an election. –Otto
Von Bismarck

but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.- Abraham Lincoln
A man who seeks truth and love it must be reckoned precious to any human society.
– Frederick the Great
Choose one quote from Truth and Lies. Write a reflection using the following guide
questions:
Truth chosen Quotation: If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything- Mark
Twain (1835-1910)
1. What particular issues inspired you to decide that the quotation you chose is
applicable/apt as of this time?
Because this quotation can be used any time we try to hide the truth. Every time a
person hides the truth they will always feel a nagging feeling in them, called guilt. In
the quotation the part of you don’t have to remember anything signifies the feeling
of guilt because when you are guilty you will always remember and it won’t go away
unless you tell the truth
2. How is the quotation you choose significant to your own life?
Because whenever I lie I always feel guilt and whenever I tell the truth I don’t feel it. It’s kind of like a
experience kind of thing.
3. If applied, what maybe some of its implications to the issue you identified?
If it was applied a lot of people will be telling the truth and instead of being afraid of the
consequences they will be afraid to tell lies, this in turn will make it more difficult to tell white lies ,
which are lies that do good for the people. And because of this the world would go into chaos, since lies
are needed in this world and be balanced with the truth in order for chaos to not ensue.
Lies chosen Quotation: A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to
get its pants on.
–Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
1. What particular issues inspired you to decide that the quotation you chose is
applicable/apt as of this time?
Because when I was a kid I always lie and from that experience I know that more lies cannot form a truth, eventually they will find
out.
2. How is the quotation you choose significant to your own life?
Because lying all the time will only get you as far but sooner or later the truth will always be revealed
3. If applied, what maybe some of its implications to the issue you identified?
If applied people will still lie but the truth will be revealed either way, so basically it is the same as normal. Lies usually
works but one day it will be revealed that’s what the quote says. This happens all the time in the real world so if this was
implemented, which it already is will change nothing. The only issue with this is that people will still lie, expecting that they
would get away with it.
b. Analysis
Answer the following questions:
Be truthful so you may see yourself.
1. Are you a truthful person? Kinda I tell the truth if can accept the consequences and
not if I am too afraid to face it
2. During the times when you have not been truthful, did you hurt
somebody in any way? No usually my lies are harmless. I know which lies
can harm people
3. Did you make a conscious effort to tell the truth after having reflected on
the implications of your action? Yes always has
4. Did you do something to rectify your faults in this regard? Always
5. Do you recognize the importance of the value of truth in your life, family,
studies, and country? Yes you should tell the truth and sometimes when
needed you have to make white lies
6. Are you ready to commit yourself to the truth in your own dealings and in
its defense as a virtue of righteousness? Yes because I always regret not
telling it
c. Abstraction
Now, let us see what is in truth and in lies
When Pope Leo XIII threw open the archives of the Vatican to the world, some
Catholics expressed fear and disapproval. They were afraid that some facts
would not be to the glory of the Church. Pope Leo gave the famous reply, “Great
is the truth and it shall prevail.”
Lies are the keys to a bad marriage, a run with the law,
the destruction of friendship….
And a million other reasons than can make your life,
a chronicle of struggles and testament of misery
Truth entails sacrifices and effort but it is a worthy cause that highlights your own
capacity as persons to do good and live with integrity. When in doubt about a
certain issue that tend to challenge your integrity, look towards the “Absolute
Truth” that is God and discover that only good things of value and those that esteem
truth spring forth from Him. (“I am the way, the truth and the life”- John 14:7)
Honesty should be applied in all your roles in life, be it as a friend, brother, sister.
Finally, no one has a monopoly on truth and in the end, the truth always prevails.
