Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Hand tools refer to any type of tool that can be used by hand and does
not require any motor or electrical power. This includes an array of tools such
as hammers, wrenches, cutters, clamps, and many others. Hand tools are
basic necessities to carry out even the smallest of household tasks.

What is It

Danny's eagerness to learn more about computer system servicing, he decided to

devote most of his time in studying the various facts and information about this field. And
here's what Danny learned about…

Electrical circuits are composed of a multitude of

components, including wires and cables. Electrical
connectors are used to join these to form a continuous path
for electrical current to flow. Connectors have male-ends
(plugs) and female-ends (jacks) which connect to each other
forming either a permanent connection or, more often, a
temporary connection that can be assembled and removed
with special tools.

LIST OF TOOLS AND MATERIALS

1. SCREWDRIVER

It is used for driving screw available in many sizes, 6”, 12”.

2. TOOL 216 – B/C

It is used for tightening /loosening of terminal

covers and Protector nuts.

3. LONG NOSE PLIERS

Have long slender jaws that are flat on the

inside used for such purposes as gripping small
particles reaching places not accessible by
hand.

4. DIAGONAL SIDE CUTTER

Are equipped with cutting jaws that are cut at

an angle of about 15 degrees used for wire
cutting and in general of any work of this type.

7
5. BRIDLE RING

It reduces potential wire abrasion, minimizes magnetic

interference to communication signals, and is easier to install.
The shape and flexibility of the improved bridle ring enable it to
be opened wider than existing metallic bridle rings, allowing
easier insertion of wires.

Non-metallic construction minimizes potential wire abrasion and

reduces the possibility of magnetic interference with
communication sign

6. EXTENSION LADDER

It is on the most important cable splicers equipment made of

fiber glass on a strap attached on a messenger wire on an aerial
operations and place on a pole when testing on terminals.

7. HARD HAT

Protect worker from falling object or debris

8. SAFETY BELT AND STRAP

It is used to support workman while working ladders or any

location when it affords safely to the wearer and at the same
time it allows freedom of the arms, hands and feet in the
performance of the required task.

Electrical task can be accomplished systematically to

save time, effort and resources. Most of the work cannot be
equipment are needed to perform the job.

8
While having fun of learning the various tools and materials needed for computer
system servicing, Danny also thinks about the rules that he can apply before, during and after
using them. He believes that these factors are indeed very important to keep him safe and
well-prepared for the possible untoward incidents during the contest.

Rules for Hand Tools

1. Use your Personal Protective Equipment.

Wearing protective equipment is vital when you are using your

hand tools. In fact, it should be a mandatory rule for any of us.
You have to wear steel toe shoes, safety glasses, gloves, face
and welding masks, hearing protection, hard hats, apron
leather, etc. never do an exception from this rule. Even if you
need to use your hand tools, only for a few minutes, it is
extremely important to wear protective gear.

2. Choose the right tool for the job.

First of all, you need to know very well how to use correct your
hand tools. Read carefully the manufacturer instruction
regarding the proper use of these tools and the precautions that
you should keep in mind. Always use the right tool for the right
job. Do not use small tools to do big jobs. It is unsafe, leading to
a tool strain and ultimately to a breaking of the tool.

3. Make sure the tools you select for the job are in first-class condition.

For a safety use of your hand tools, it is critical to keep your work area in the best conditions.
First, you should always keep clean where you work. Therefore, do not leave metal span,
wood chips, dust, dirty paper towels, oily clothes, and rags in your working area. It is a fire
hazard and can damage your hand tools. It is necessary to systematically, clean your
workplace and to keep scrap and waste in specific containers.

A wet work surface floor can be a potential danger. They may become electrical conductors,
which could lead to an electric soc. Also, wet working floor area may be slippery leading to
fall hazards.

An important prevention measure is to keep your work area free of flammable liquids and
materials that could be a serious fire hazard. Any spark produced by your hand tools could
trigger a devastating fire.

4. Use tools properly.

9
Always unplug your hand tool from the outlet before cleaning, grease it or changing blades or
parts.
• Do not use your hand tools when you are tired no matter how urgent it is to fix
something.
• Do not work in awkward or difficult position. You will not properly handle your tool.
Keep your hand tools in secure areas.
Do not leave them unattended and at the reach of children. Keep them away from the table or
shelves edges.

What’s More

After gaining so much information, let us join Danny in his journey to learning and help
him to sharpen his memory by doing the following electrifying activities. Let's do this...

Tools are one of the most important stuff. Only with

good tools, you can keep your household in the best
conditions. However, only the possession of good tools is
not enough to make you a handyman. You need to know
how to use properly these tools to prevent any injury that
might occur.
