I. Find the value of the following functions. (3 points each)


1. f(4) = x3 + 2x2 – 4x – 5
= 43 + 2(4)2 – 4(4) – 5
= 64 + 2(16) – 16 – 5
= 64 + 32 – 16 – 5
f(4) = 75
2. g(-2) = -2x3 + x2 -10
= -2(-2)3 + (-2)2 – 10
= -2(-8) + 4 – 10
= 16 + 4 – 10
g(-2) = 10
3. c(4) = (x – 2)2 – 5
= (4 – 2 )2 – 5
= (4 – 2 ) (4 – 2 ) – 5
= (2) (2) – 5
=4–5
c(4)= - 1
4. b(-4) = (x + 4) – (x – 3)
= (-4 + 4) – (-4 – 3)
b(-4) = 7
5. v(|-5|) = x2 – 4x + 3
= (5)2 – 4(5) + 3
= 25 – 20 + 3
v(|-5|) = 8

II. Perform the operation indicated in each item. (5 points each).


Given: x(n) = -n3 – 4,
y(n) = n2 + n – 6,
z(n) = n + 3
6. x(n) + y(n) + z(n)
-n3 – 4 + n2 + n – 6 + n + 3
-n3 + n2 + 2n – 7
7. y(n) – x(n)
= n2 + n – 6 – (-n3 – 4)
= n2 + n – 6 + n3 + 4
= n3 + n2 + n – 2
8. x(n) x z(n)
= (n3 – 4) ( n + 3)
= n4 + 3n3 – 4n – 12

9. y(n)/z(n)
(n2 + n – 6) / (n + 3)
(n2 – 6) / (3) or n2 – 6

= y[x(n)]
= (-n3 – 4)2 + (-n3 – 4) – 6
= (-n3 – 4) (-n3 – 4) - n3 – 4 – 6
= -n6 + 4n3 + 4n3 + 16 - n3 – 4 – 6
= -n6 + 7n3 +6
