Self-Learning Modules
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the expressing
fractions to decimals and percent and vice versa. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

What’s In?
Hello! How are you today? I am so glad that you are indeed excited to take this module as you start this
subject by reviewing what you have learned on expressing fractions, decimals and percent. It is necessary for us
to learn how to express one of these forms to another. So, let us recall on the following terms for you to better
understand the lessons in this module.
A. CONCEPT OF FRACTION
A fraction is a number written in the form α andb , where α and b are whole numbers but b cannot be
zero. The number on top, α is called numerator, and the number below,b is called denominator.
Example:
In a fraction given above, the denominator tells the number of parts a whole is divided, while the
2
numerator indicates how many of those are taken. The fraction means the unit two is divided into five parts
5
2
and that two of the five parts are taken. Moreover, also means 2 ÷ 5.

C. CONCEPT OF PERCENT
A percent (%) which means “per hundred” is a representation of a fraction whose denominator is
100. Thus, expressing a number in percent is like comparing it with 100.

What’s New?
Congratulations! You have learned in this lesson about the concepts of fractions, decimals and
percent. This time, you will learn more about this as we continue to express fractions to decimals, percent and
vice versa. Before we proceed with the discussions, do the following activity to check your understanding on the
basic concepts of fractions, decimals and percent.
Directions: Complete the table below. Write the corresponding equivalents in the box. Write your answers in a
one (1) whole sheet of paper.
