MULTIGRADE PROGAM IN PHILIPPINE EDUCATION (MPPE)

In the Philippines, the first mission schools were organized as multigrade schools. Single
grade schooling was introduced during the early 1990s by the Americans. Multigrade
schools were organized as matter of necessity for remote barangays. Aside from limited
enrolment, the distance of the barangay to a school, teacher shortage, lack of funds for
school buildings and other facilities also led to the organization of multigrade schools in
different parts of the country. Although schools with one teacher handling more than one
grade have been common in the Philippines since at least 1920s, the formal Multigrade
Program in Philippine Education (MPPE) was launched in 1993.
